The one argument that is really irritating me the most is the idea that if they haven’t done it by now, they are never going to do it.¬† To me, that’s just stupid.¬† Will Andy Reid ever win a championship in Philly?¬† I have no clue.¬† Maybe, maybe not.¬† I have no idea and you don’t either.¬† Will Donovan hoist the Lombardi Trophy in the 215?¬† Again, I sure don’t know and neither do you.¬† If you or anyone else knew for sure about any of these things, you’d have made millions of dollars gambling already because you are able to predict the future.
There is a good possibility that they never win, and maybe that’s the way it turns out.¬† But no one ever looks at history?¬† I’ve heard several people say, “if Donovan can’t win it in 10 years, he never will.”
That’s beyond idiotic.¬† Tell the fans in Denver that they should have cut John Elway in 1993.¬† He can’t win the big one and he never, ever will.¬† How many people do you think said that back then in Denver?¬† Three Super Bowls, three blowouts.¬† He just can’t get it done.¬† Those with half a brain would look and say that without John Elway, they don’t sniff those Super Bowls.¬† He was throwing to mediocre receivers (unless you love Vance Johnson, Mark Jackson and Ricky Nattiel) with horrific backfields (Sammy Winder, Gerald Wilhite, Steve Sewell, Bobby Humphrey).¬†
The Broncos were so sick of Elway that they spent a first-round pick on his replacement, Tommy Maddox, in 1992.¬† Elway didn’t complain, he just simply kept playing.¬† Then something magical happened….he got a running game!¬† Wow, look at that.¬† Some pieces get added to the puzzle and suddenly he has back-to-back championships.¬† And he had to do much less to win those games than he did before in just getting to the Super Bowl.
As for Andy Reid, same thing.¬† Ask Pittsburgh Steelers fans what they thought of Bill Cowher after 10 years.¬† He couldn’t win the big one.¬† He’d been to a Super Bowl, but he just can’t get it done and he never will.¬† He was hired in 1992 and it wasn’t until 2005 that he was finally able to get over the hump and win it all.¬† And I’ll go a step further, if Big Ben doesn’t make a play on Nick Harper, who was headed to victory with a Jerome Bettis fumble in the divisional playoff round, Cowher still doesn’t have a ring, and isn’t in position to write his own checks with just about any NFL team he wants right now.¬† That’s just more evidence that a lot of little things go into winnning a championship.¬† But, Cowher is a genius, right?
It’s possible that Andy and Donovan never get it done, but be careful what you wish for.¬† You never know when Rich Kotite and Bobby Hoying will be running the show.¬† And stop applying the logic of “if it hasn’t happened yet, it never will,” because that’s just not true.¬† Maybe the team is better off splitting them up or moving both of them, who knows?¬† Only time will tell.¬† But the idea that it will never happen because it hasn’t happened yet is just ludicrous.¬†
