Eagles add Special Teams Coach Bobby April

In addition to getting rid of their strength and conditioning coaches, the Eagles also made a move with the special teams coach.  The Birds hired former Bills special teams ace Bobby April and fired Ted Daisher.

I think this is a great move even though I don’t think special teams as a whole were that bad.  The Eagles covered kicks pretty well this year and I think their problems in kick returns had more to do with the lack of a capable return body than coaching.

But still, April is one of the best in the business and he was coveted by several teams after he voided the final year of his deal with the Bills.  He signed a three-year deal with the Eagles and should come in and make a good unit even better.

I’ll be curious to see what this means for Sav Rocca.  He was one of the few (only) players who didn’t stink up the joint in the Dallas games, but he still hasn’t been good enough.  He’s got a good leg, but he’s a wild card.  It could be great punt, but it could be a stink bomb too.  Does April work with him to make him better?  Does he come in and say ‘this guy can’t play we need to move in a different direction?’  I think that he’ll bring some serious camp competition in regardless.

I know one thing, he better squash the idea of Jeremy Maclin as a kick returner…..ever.   Regardless of who is hurt.  Maclin just can’t do it and hopefully April clears that up for Andy Reid.
