Brian Westbrook won’t be lining up in the Eagles backfield next season, so it’s no surprise that the Birds would be looking for additional talent at the running back position.
You know how the Eagles love running backs who are just as good catching the football as they are tucking it under their arm and running with it.
The Eagles signed a running back who played in the Canadian Football League last year. His name is Martell Mallett and he put up some big numbers as a running back a year ago.
Mallett (6-0, 210) spent the 2009 season as a member of the CFL’s BC Lions, where he rushed for 1,280 yards and six touchdowns on 214 carries (5.8 average), adding 43 receptions for 342 yards and two touchdowns. He was named to the West Division All-Star team and also earned the 2009 CFL Most Outstanding Rookie award.
The 23-year-old Mallett played collegiately at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where he rushed for 2,896 yards and 27 touchdowns in his four-year career. The Pine Bluff, Arkansas native earned first-team all-SWAC honors as a senior in 2008.
