Andy Reid gave Jevon Kearse and Brian Westbrook the day off on Sunday so they could "rest their legs". They should also have given Jeremiah Trotter the day off. His legs could use the rest just as much as those other guys, maybe even moreso.
Trot only has but so many plays left in his legs and I think the Birds need to save those plays for the season. He plays a very physical brand of middle linebacker and I would like to see him save all that effort for when it counts.
I know Trot loves to practice and he loves to get in the faces of his teammates, make the defensive calls and get in some good hits. Unfortunately I can see how in the second practices, he seems to be laboring from the earlier workout. I have an idea how his legs feel. He doesn't need all of that work. At this stage in his career, Jeremiah is not going to get better from spending all day on his legs and pushing them like he's doing.
Jeremiah no longer has the ability to cover a good tight end or running back. His legs can no longer change directions so he's a liability in the one on one coverage. I would like the see the Birds give him some protection in some of those coverages. I especially don't like the coverage which has him trying to stay with a wide receiver in the redzone.
If I were Andy Reid or Jim Johnson, I would have Jeremiah working out only one practice per day. There's no way I would have him out there going twice a day, in fact I wouldn't have him doing everything in the first practice. I'd make sure he got enough work so that he had his timing down and had become comfortable working with Spikes and Gocong, then I would shut him down. He gets a big cheer after each tackle he makes during this training camp, but every one of those plays is subtracting from what he can do in the future.
