So far the answer to the title is no, but the big discussion in the press box last during the Eagles-Jets game concerned Eagles left defensive end Jevon Kearse. The question was asked again and again. Will the Eagles release Jevon Kearse?
Kearse has been a major disappointment since he's been here, and he's scheduled to make $5.2 million dollars this year. If they released him the salary cap hit would be only $600,000 dollars, so you can see from a financial it could be a consideration.
Kearse has been outplayed by both of his backups during the preseason. 2006 free agent acquisition Juqua Thomas has been much more productive as a pass rusher than Kearse in the preseason games. Thomas made a big play against the Carolina Panthers with a sack, forced fumble, along with another QB pressure. Rookie, Notre Dame product Victor Abiamiri is much bigger and stronger than Kearse. His size and aggressiveness make him a better run defender than Jevon. If you let the rookie play on run downs and bring in Thomas on pass downs, you'vll probably get a solid performance from your left defensive end spot.
By the way, if you were to combine the salaries of Thomas and Abiamiri, they still would equal the $5.2 million the Birds are paying Kearse.
So far my sources say Kearse is in no danger of being released.Yet I still look at his production, salary, cap hit if released, and wonder why he isn't in some danger of being let go. Stay tuned.
