Andy Reid talked quite a bit about Brian Dawkins the treatment he got for his neck injury. He also commented on Donovan McNabb's progress coming back from his injury.
Head Coach Andy Reid Press Conference

Injuries:
“Players that will not practice today, [FS] Brian Dawkins and [TE] L.J. Smith. [Smith] still has some soreness in the groin area. We’ll just see how both of them do as we go through the week here.”
Opening Remarks:
“We look forward to the challenge of playing the Chicago Bears. [They are] reigning NFC champs. They bring into town an offense that is much improved over the last couple of weeks and a defense that has unbelievable quickness. Then, obviously their special teams is right now probably the most explosive in the National Football League. Again, we look forward to the challenge of playing them.”
On what Bears QB Brian Griese brings to the offense:
“Brian’s a veteran player. He’s been around to a couple teams and has had success in this league. I think, probably number one, his experience is what he brings into that mix.”
On whether holding Smith out is precautionary or if he is having a setback:
“Right now, he’s sore. We’ve got to let that thing calm down and see how he does here in the next couple days.”
On what he has seen from the Bears defense:
“I think that’s the number one thing there with them. With the guys they’re playing they’re doing better every week. They are very, very fast. That’s the number one thing that you see, quick up front and fast with the linebackers and the secondary.”
On how much the Bears defense changed from the first half of last year to this year:
“Schematically it’s the same. They’ve just got some people missing out there because of injuries. It’s the same scheme that [Bears head coach] Lovie’s [Smith] run forever.”
On whether he’s surprised that other teams have allowed Bears PR/KR Devin Hester to return the ball:
“On punts it might be a little easier than on kickoffs. I don’t think anybody really wants him to touch the ball. Being in a situation where you can actually do that, it’s different. He’s some kind of player. He’s the best right now in the business, he really is.”
On what the practice plan for CB Lito Sheppard is:
“Lito will practice today.”
On whether Sheppard will participate fully:
“Yeah.”
On what the specialist said about Dawkins this past weekend:
“It was more of a rehab program. They did treatment on him. It wasn’t a doctor, per se, that looked at him. He’s making progress, that’s the thing. Like I’ve mentioned before, when you’re dealing with nerves it can be a slow process and truly a day-to-day process. But, he is feeling better. He’s on demand and that’s a good thing.”
On whether it’s safe to say that Dawkins will play at some point this year:
“Yeah. Hopefully this week, but if it doesn’t work this week then we’ll see how it goes the next week.”
On how long it will take for Dawkins to be ready when he does come back:
“The thing he’s able to do now is condition, so he won’t lose that part. The actual hitting part is the part that he will have lost. We’ll bring him back when he can come back and work him into the practice. You saw the last time we did that. We let him kind of bang off of guys, not take them to the ground, but bang off of them. We’ll see how he feels and just kind of play it be ear as we go.”
On how hard it is psychologically to bounce back from losing in the Super Bowl:
“I think if you have obstacles in there, it’s tough. They’ve [Chicago Bears] got some injuries. That’s the part that’s making it tough for them. We had other situations that made it a little tough for us [after losing the Super Bowl in 2004]. I guess history shows you that it’s not an easy thing to do. When you’re there doing it, you don’t believe that. You just keep doing what you do and keep pushing forward. I’m sure that’s what the Bears are doing now. They are preparing themselves week in and week out to win football games. Maybe the thing works out for them, you don’t know. With injuries guys come back and things can change real quick. But, the history shows you, for whatever reason, it’s a little tough to do.”
On how P Sav Rocca is handling the pressure this week:
“He’s okay with the pressure. It doesn’t seem to bother him. I haven’t seen him in awe of the crowds or the game itself. He’s kind of been there and done that down in Australia. He’s been a little bit inconsistent. But, his short punts are some people’s long punts. That’s a plus. He’ll get himself in stride as we go on here.”
On where Rocca is on directional punting:
“He’s pretty good at that. He’s real good with it when he does it with the end-over-end kick. [He’s] not bad, probably better than most, doing a little spiral.”
On whether they game plan around QB Donovan McNabb because of his knee injury:
“We’re not really gameplanning around him. We feel like he can do everything that he’s been able to do in this offense. We’re not a big bootleg team, where he’s got to sprint out and do all those things. That’s not something we’ve done in the past a lot and we haven’t done it this year. But, the things we’ve asked him to do in the past he’s able to do now.”
On whether he expected that they might not know what to see from McNabb at the beginning of the year:
“As you study the injuries, similar injuries with that position, in the past it normally took them four or five games to get into the swing of things. I thought Don was ahead of schedule. I think that’s shown true. He’s getting better every week and he’ll continue to do that.”
On whether McNabb will ever be fully healed because right now he looks like he’s not all there:
“That will all come back with time.”
