The talent on the Timber Creek Chargers football team has been quite evident all year long, but they lacked the quality play at the quarterback position to make them a favorite to be a championship team again this season. Junior signal caller Dan Williams who took over as the team’s starting quarterback in the middle of the season, has solved their QB problem.
On Friday night in the first round of the South Jersey Group 4 playoffs, Williams completed 19 of 25 attempts for 262 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 1 ranked Chargers beat No. 8 Hammonton 37-6. It wasn’t the numbers which were the most impressive part of Williams’ performance, it was the poise and confidence with which he played.
The Chargers got the scoring started when Williams hooked up with Gary Sandes for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The quarterback also scored on a one-yard plunge. At the end of the first half, Williams completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Khali Pierce to give the Chargers a 18-0 lead.
The scoring in the second half started with Pierce scoring on a one-yard run. In the third quarter Timber Creek crossed up Hammonton by handing the ball off to wide reciever, Adonis Jennings, who took the handoff and blazed to a 40-yard touchdown. Williams wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter, by hitting Sandes again, this time for a 20-yard touchdown.
The youngster has developed game during the season and taken it to another level by spending time after practice working on his fundamentals and understanding of both the rushing and passing game. Williams took over in the nick of time for a team which lost a couple of winnable games earlier in the season, which were lost due to an offense that couldn’t deliver.
The young quarterback’s father is longtime Eagles running back’s coach Ted Williams.
