From Tim, Garry,I just have a few observations and comments that I would like to share. First, one thing that I am failing to see out of this team is clear leadership amongst the players other than Dawkins and Spikes.
This year the NFL wanted to portray its players in positive ways as to show that they aren't all causing problems off the field (i.e. Pacman and Chris Henry). They went about this by adding the captain's "C" on the jerseys of the team captains. I've noticed that an overwhelming majority of the teams in the league are participating in this, with one of the exceptions being the Eagles. Why?
Is this another sign of arrogance from the team that they don't have to participate? Is it that most of the teams that do participate have a "C" on the jersey of their quarterback and Donovan isn't a team captain, so they didn't want to possibly embarrass him? I'm not sure about his status, but I am just speculating. I would like to see who the players regard as leaders on this team.
I don't know if this happens, but I think the team captains need to show the heart and desire and question Andy, Marty and Jim when they know that they are not being put in a position to win a game. I don't want them to do this via the media, but on the field when the play calling has been very inconsistent and not sticking with what works. Case in point, I heard Tra Thomas say last night that during their film study last week, they knew they could run the ball with success to his side, yet they abandoned it throughout the game and passed to receivers and fullbacks who struggled to catch the ball. Do players go up to the coaching staff and say we need to do this, or we need to get back to what is working?
This team clearly needs a spark of some kind. I know not all leaders are fiery guys, but look at the difference that a player like Garcia brought to virtually the same team last year. I've always been a Donovan supporter, and I'm hoping he reclaims the magic he had before, but I really don't see this team getting any better with him at the helm unless they bring in another stud on offense to help him out. And since we know the management style of this team, the likelihood of that happening is slim. We all want to see a winner, but I'm afraid that this current regime with Andy and Donovan running the ship are losing ground very fast to the rest of the conference, and especially the division.
Last point I want to make is in regards to the media and how they handle the press conferences. I unfortunately don't get to see every one, but it really appears that most of the journalists don't push Andy to get answers. There seems to be a lack of follow up questions when Andy refuses to answer an initial question. It almost appears that they don't want to get Andy upset. I would like to see Andy get a little fired up about something for once. For example, someone may ask a question about the team's performance and Andy replies, "I have to get them in a better position" blah, blah, blah. Why don't we hear a follow like, "Well what are you going to do to get them in a better position?" "What are you going to do this week in practice to fix these problems you are having?" I know he probably won't answer with something of substance, but it's time to start demanding some answers. It's very hard for all of us to watch the ship sinking in the middle of the ocean with no ability to rescue it.
Thanks for your time and all that you do from a 10 year season ticket holder.
