From Jake, G-I watched the Birds/Bears game and the one thing that sticks out in my mind took place towards the end of the fourth quarter. First, Todd Herremans gets called for a questionable holding penalty which pushes the Birds back to 3rd and 17.
Then, on 3rd and 17 McNabb throws a lateral pass to Brian Westbrook. Yes a lateral pass on 3rd and 17. These are the kinds of plays that baffle the mind. How do you throw a lateral and ask Westbrook to make 17 yards out of nothing – most importantly – when the game is on the line? I don't know if its the play calling by the coaching staff or Donovan's unwillingness to throw a ball to a guy that's covered, but its plays like that where folks call into question his and the coaching staff's ability to call the right plays.
Donovan thinks the level of scrutiny he receives in this city is largely due to the color of his skin. I, and I think many in this city couldn't care less about the color of his skin. The criticism he recieves has to do with plays like this where he throws a lateral on 3rd and 17. This kind of play, or ones where he throws a 3 yard pass on 3rd and 6 are the kinds of plays that happen time and time again, and this is the driving force, not race, that causes this fanbase to criticize both he and the coaching staff.
I have always been a staunch supporter of Donovan and the coaching staff, but even I am getting sick of the boneheaded moves these guys seem to be making now on a regular basis.
