Today, the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms with safety Quintin Demps on a four-year contract.
Demps, a fourth round draft choice of the Eagles in 2008, was one of the top playmaking defensive backs in college football during his career at UTEP. His 17 career interceptions were the most among all players in the 2008 draft class and rank 2nd in both Conference USA and school history. Demps became the first player in school and conference history to have two 100-yd. INT returns in both a season and a career (at Central Florida and at New Mexico State in 2007). He also holds the school record with 404 INT return yards, becoming only the 7th player in NCAA history to top the 400-yard mark in that category. In 2007, Demps earned third team All-America and All-Conference USA honors as he set school and league records by posting 220 return yards on 5 interceptions, including two touchdowns.
A native of San Antonio, TX, Demps idolized Deion Sanders as a child and actually had a chance to meet him at the NFL Combine prior to running his 40-yard dash.
I personally like this kid. He's got playmaking skills and the versatility to play a number of difference positions. He's able to return punts, plus he's got the versatility to play man-to-man on wide receivers.
That mean he has some corner skills. From looking at him I feel he would be the best cover guy of the Birds safeties.
This kid is not the warm and fuzzy type. He never cracks a smile and is always looking very serious. When you talk to him he keeps the distance. I don't know what that's all about but we will find out over time. I do think this kid can help the Birds this year. I can't vouch for his tackling.
I haven't heard good things about his love of contact but that's alright, he just needs to get the ball carrier on the ground.
