We had heard that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie wanted to hire a bright college coach, but we had no idea that his list included a young coach, who had only one year of head coaching experience.
According to Texas A&M insider Billy Liucci, the Eagles offered the head coaching job to Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin. The young head coach has blazed a trail to the top of numerous head coaching lists by leading the Aggies to an 11-2 record and an upset of the National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide in his rookie season as head coach.
Sumlin coached freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel, who was the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy. He did this all in his rookie season as a head coach. He spent five years at Oklahoma working for the Bob Stoops.
Liucci says the interest and offer from the Eagles and Auburn University have helped Sumlin get his salary bumped up $1.1 million dollars to $3.1 million dollars a year.
Last year was not Kevin Sumlin’s first year as a head coach. If you retract and say that this was his first year as a head coach for a National power that would be correct, but he had head coaching experience at the University of Houston from 2008 to 2011. In 2011 his team was 12 wins with 1 loss.
What sane reason would they want to hire this guy to improve the team? Howie is just ridiculous. That doesn’t make any sense at all.
Well under that logic what did Chip Kelly have to offer? This dude appears to have had success at every level of coaching and has coached one of the big time college QBs entering the draft (2014 or 2015?) in Johnny Manziel – why couldn’t he improve the team?
Nice talking to to you TsJohnson….Chip Kelly, I understand more so because of his ties to current NFL Coaches like Belichick, his success at Oregon, and his creative innovation.
This guy hasn’t been that successful at the University of Houston, or Texas A&M to justify hiring him. There is no contest in reference to the success Chip Kelly had at Oregon. Chip wins hands down, and without an argument.
IMHO, the ties to Johnny Manziel, are irrelevant. He isn’t going to be a star in the NFL anyway. His success as a college athlete doesn’t translate into a superstar in the NFL from what I see…I see a Ryan Fitzpatrick type player, with a little more athleticism; serviceable, but nothing special. I see Matt Barkley in the same light.I’m not impressed. I was impressed the way the Texas A&M TEAM played against Alabama.
Some have a hard time distinguishing from the teams success, and the success of the teams superstar, as if the superstar won the game by himself. He also had some bad games we don’t discuss as well
But this Sumlin guy would have been a terrible choice to coach this team.
He has done NOTHING special to be considered an NFL Head Coach.
Some Coaches are suited for just College Football, and I think Coach Sumlin is one of them. Chip Kelly may also be one, but justifiably, he is more suited to take a chance on than this guy.

You would have been better served just stating you believe Kelly is a better coach. But to use the rationalization that Sumlin wasn’t successful at either Houston or Texas A&M shows either a bias or poor research on his record. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you just believe Kelly is better. But Sumlin’s HC coaching record at both schools shows a trajectory of success. Might want to research this again.
