It’s Fantasy Football prep time. I’m going to help get the ball rolling, starting with the quarterbacks. I look at everything, what the player has done for me lately, additions and subtractions with both rosters and coaches, strength of schedule and injuries. This is going to be a four part series, starting with the quarterbacks. Second part will be running backs, the third are your receivers/tight-ends and I’ll finish it with defenses/special teams and kickers.
Top 12 Quarterbacks
(Scoring settings- 1 point for every 25 yards passing, 6 points for a passing or rushing td, -2 for interception, 1 point for every 10 yards rushing.)
1. Aaron Rodgers– “Man-Crush,” he can do damage with running the ball as well, and he gets the slight nod with the #1 spot.
2. Drew Brees- His coach is back, Graham should be fully healthy, and Lance Moore showed he can be a true threat as the slot. Saints throw the ball, “a lot!” He could easily be taken as the 1st QB in your draft.
3. Peyton Manning-If adding another off-season to build chemistry with his already proven receivers of Decker and Thomas weren’t enough, he has the best slot guy to throw to for the 2013 season. Last year the doubters feared that his surgically repaired neck, age and year out of football would weaken his skill-set. Manning is still a top five FF quarterback, and for 2013, he is my 3rd overall.
4. Tom Brady– He lost his main man to the Broncos. One tight-end is recovering from surgery and the other is being questioned by the law. This is Tom Brady; he just finds a way to get it done with whoever are his passing targets.
5. Cam Newton-Dual threat. After an unbelievable rookie season where he ballooned up to first round selection status on many 2012 FF drafts, he disappointed last season. His last six games however for those who had not traded Newton, were happy to see him look much like his rookie campaign. Out of the five quarterbacks who are true running threats, his physical statue keeps owners from fearing he is one hit away from a stint to the IR list. Not the greatest cast of receivers after an aging Steve Smith and average tight-end in Olsen, but his legs will equate for 800+ yards and 8+ touchdowns.
6. Matt Ryan– He has arguably the second best set trio with his receiving crew behind Peyton’s crew and just ahead of Rodgers. I expect his numbers to take a bit of a dive from last year with Steven Jackson stealing a few touchdowns, but Ryan gets the job done, and is in a division that has struggled against the pass for the last few seasons.
7. Russell Wilson-Once Seattle allowed Wilson to air the ball out, he showed he can make the big time throws, plus collect ample yardage on the ground when defenses position themselves to tackle the physical style that Lynch brings. Percy Harvin has joined the squad, re-uniting with his teammate and good friend Sidney Rice. The Seahawks are still going to pound the rock, but Wilson is going to be steady for FF owners.
8. Matthew Stafford– The big arm from the University of Georgia was a disappointment last year; threw for a bunch of yards, but also collected too many interceptions with mediocre touchdown production. Megatron is still there, decent tight-ends. Injuries to his other receivers last year translated into many forced throws. The addition with Reggie Bush and some healthy second and third receiving threats should push Stafford back into more than just a decent starting option.
9. RG3– I won’t make the same mistake that I did with waiting for another owner to draft Adrian Peterson last year coming off a big surgery. RG3 will not be asked to run like he did last year, but that does not translate to a pocket style quarterback. RG3 is a playmaker; I would however suggest that you don’t wait until the end of the draft to select your backup quarterback.
10. Collin Kaepernick-(I’d have him ranked two spots higher if not for the loss of Crabtree). When not throwing to Crabtree last season, Kaepernick’s statistics were nothing to smile about. The coach of the 49ers will not make excuses for his offense due to injury. I expect 2012 first rounder Jenkins to be utilized in a slot role, and Boldin as a possession receiver. Vernon Davis will be used more in motion, with the 49ers spending a second round pick on tight-end Vance McDonald. Expect Kaepernick to do even more with his legs this year; as the display he showed off versus the Packers in the playoffs was not a fluke by any means.
11. Tony Romo– When your offensive line is bad and your running backs can’t stay healthy, throw, throw, throw. That is what Romo does, and although he throws the ball often to the other team, he puts up pretty consistent fantasy stats. If you can swallow the fact that you have to show more interest in the Dallas Cowboys then you normally would; fill in your skill position depth in the early rounds and wait for your quarterback.
12. Andrew Luck- He has nice receivers, two above average tight-ends, and with the acquisition of Bradshaw, some receiving threat potential out of the backfield. I think the play-call selection will scale back some of the deep balls Luck lets loose, but he has tremendous big play speed with sophomore T.Y. Hilton and former first rounder Heyward-Bey.
Next in Line
(13-18) Eli Manning, Andy Dalton, Jay Cutler, Carson Palmer, Matt Shaub
Sleeper- Phillip Rivers- Not too long ago he was a top eight quarterback, then his supporting cast left San Diego for other teams. (Sproles, Tomilson, Vincent Jackson). Rivers was awful last season, I had him and I had multiple weeks with better point production from my kicker. Under a new coach who did a very well with his quarterbacks during his tenure with Denver, Rivers has a great chance to reclaim the confidence to finish the 2013 FF season as a top 12 QB.
Bust-Michael Vick- Do a favor to your FF mindset and let 2010 serve as the past. Vick will not return to form. The clock is ticking before he gets hurt. And this is only if Chip Kelly elects him to the starter.
Rookie/Second Year Player with huge upside– Andrew Luck. The offensive play-calling will be more west-coast, but Luck will take a big leap in his sophomore season.
Where’s QB Ryan Tannehill of the Miami Dolphins who actually had a pretty nice ROokie Season last year after a rough start..Dolphins added Playmaking WR Mikle Wallace, Reliable WR Brandon Gibson and TE Kellen WInslow I expect the Dolphins to make some big progress Offensively and Tannehill to put up some good #’s in 2013 …
This is Paulman’s Fantasy QB of the Season..
paul, how about Mardy Gilyard? XD
Gilyard playing for my old buddy Andy Reid in KC..
Has a Chance to make the squad as a 4th/5th WR & Special Teamer
Let it go my man, let it go! LOL!!!!
I told you he was a bum…..
You didn’t tell me anything Gmcliff..
He’s is still in the NFL trying out for the Chiefs..
I bet he ends up making the Roster and being a COntributor for them this Season.. You want to bet a $10 Spot to our favorite “Charity’s”
My current favorite Charity is “Help us FInd Jon Hart”
Paulman, I’ll donate 100 bucks to that charity. My guess is that Dcar has him chained down in his basement Saw movie style.
BTW, did the Sixers just trade their Jrue (23 yr old all star) for a dude who has potential, but is coming serious knee injury? I wonder if Noel and Bynam have the same agents…
I dont think the Dolphins added Winslow but I do think they added Dustin Keller
Dustin Keller is correct Mhenski.. My bad on the stating Winslow
Remember this is Tannehill’s 4th Season now under OC Mike Sherman
(2 Seasons at Texas A&M and now his 2nd Season as a Dolphin..)
Sherman has helped develop many WB’s in his Day (Farve,Rodgers with Packers) and run a very QB Friendly system where they spready the ball out to 4-5 Receivers, run lots of Screens, and Safe Routes..
I say Vick should be the #1 pick……. LOL!
Jay Cutler and Sam Bradford are my sleepers this year.
Jay Cutler and Buc’s Josh Freeman are in their last Year of their Contracts and neither the Bears or Buc’s Coaches or Front Office will offer them a new deal meaning they are Playing for their Future Contracts as probable Free-Agents
Next Off-Season, should be interesting how they and their Teams handle it..
Fantasy Football LOL, nice article buddy. Maybe Howie can use you in the front office. Gtfo with this crap.
Don’t hate on fantasy football man. I won 15K last year in my league. Its all for fun, I love football so much that I will try to get all the enjoyment I can out of the season every year.
My top 10 FF Qbs as of right now:
1: Rodgers
2: Brees
3: Manning
4: Brady
5: Ryan
6: Luck
7: Stafford
8: Newton
9: Romo
10: Kaepernick
Damn Pheaggs 15k playing FF. You are the man!!!!! I just can’t get into it, but 15k would help. LOL
Fantasy – as in a dream or made up or where couch potatoes feel equal to greek gods.
The only Real part is his take on Vick. He isn’t even good in a Fantasy anymore!
Pheags no Russel Wilson? my top 10 are
1. Drew Brees
2. Arron Rodgers
3. Peyton Manning
4. Cam Newon
5. Russel Wilson
6. Tom Brady
7. Matt Ryan
8. Colin Kaepernick
9. Andrew Luck
10. Eli Manning
Eli Manning gets in the top 10. Victor Cruz is about as good as it gets in the slot and Hakeem Nicks is healthy. They added Brandon Myers who catches just about anything thrown his way. Eli should have a very good season.
ES, I would take Wilson on the Eagles in a heartbeat but fantasy is different. I can’t put him above guys that throw the ball so much more. I think Luck will be a top 5 fantasy QB this year, will get a you a ton of points due to playing catch up. Same thing with guys like Stafford and Romo. Fantasy is just as much about opportunity then it is skill
Sam Bradford is my underrated QB this year. He threw just under 4,000 yards last season with 21 touchdowns. Both career highs. They added 2 keys playmakers Jared Cook and Tavon Austin. Along with Chris Givens those guys are lighting fast so they are going to make plays. We should see more 50-60 yard touchdown runs because of the speed they added.
3,700 yards should go up to around 4,200 making him better than players like Matt Schuab and Joe Flacco. 21 touchdows should go up to around 25-27 making him better than Eli Manning and Russel Wilsons total touchdowns from last year.
Good Call ES about Bradford who also have WR Brian Quick from last Years Draft and Tayvon Austins Teammate Steadman Baily who may be the best all around WR from this years Draft Class as far as Route Running & Hands
The key for the Rams Offense and Bradford’s success is their ability to be able to run the ball effectively and right now, this remains a question ?
Right now they have 2 Year Veteran Isiah Pead #1 on the Depth Chart who has had some off-the field issues and Rookie Zac Stacy and not much else..
If Rams can’t run the ball occasionally, teams will blitz the heck out of Bradford and remember that the Rams play in NFC West vs Seahawks/49ers and play the mTwice a year who have very good Defenses/Secondarie’s so it will be interesting to see what happens.. but no doubt about it, Bradford will have the best OL and Weapons at WR & TE since he’s been in the Pro’s and it’s time for him to stay healthy and play well…
***Trade Alert
Eagles Trade RB Bryce Brown to the Rams for WR Brian Quick straight up
