Will DeSean Jackson Be An Eagle In 2014?

DeSeanJackson7What is DeSean Jackson worth? How much has his past and present play calculated to the check book of one Jeffrey Lurie? D-Jax is due more than ten million dollars in 2014. Will the Eagles elect to pay?

Many would title DeSean as a play-maker and weapon, but not what you would equate to as true #1 wide-receiver in the NFL. Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, AJ Green, Dez Bryant, Vincent Jackson, these guys are all big in stature and why they are considered #1 wide-receivers. Desean looks like he just walked out of a high-school gym, but numbers don’t lie, and Desean is getting it done on the stat sheet. 84 receptions, 1433 yards and 10 touchdowns, do these statistics deserve over ten millions dollars in 2014 for DeSean Jackson? The mentioned statistics are the projected totals for D-Jax to finish with in 2013. 5 receptions, 172 yards and 3 touchdowns are what DeSean needs to break his previous recorded highs in all major receiving categories. What Desean has done this season is truly remarkable, and although receiving some attention, enough is not being paid to the career season he is having.

His size minimizes where and how he can be used on the football field. Good defenses have shown the ability to shut him down with physical coverage, disrupting the speed that allows Jackson to find his spots. Chip Kelly has made DeSean a focal point of this offense. Play-calling involves DeSean throughout the game, and includes more than the go routes and obvious double moves that were simply failing last season.

It’s not like smaller players have not had success in the NFL, but DeSean is one the skinniest receivers I can recall on the football field. Todd Pinkston looked jacked compared to how DeSean fills out his football jersey.

I have previewed the cast of wide receiver free agents to be. There are some big bodied guys, but the overall talent level is not an upgrade to DeSean. I’m onboard for drafting a receiver in the first few rounds of the 2014 draft, however I see that player as a compliment to what DeSean provides.

Is the 2013 DeSean Jackson a fluke, or is this what we can expect to see for years to come?

It’s not our money going to the pockets of one DeSean Jackson, but we enjoy breaking down if a player is worth his salary or not.

What matters is what the guy does for the offense. He doesn’t have the traditional size of a #1, but he is producing like one this year. Those guys all create headaches because of their size, but DJax does the same with his speed.

He is having a monster season producing like those others are despite his
size. I don’t think that this is a fluke, because you have a creative mind calling the plays. He will continue to get D-Jax the ball. If this article was posted last year, I would have agreed, but there is no way they cut him now. I have been as hard as him as anyone, but he is essential to this offense.

clown question Jeff. Of course Desean will be an eagle next year. There will be 0 discussions in our FO about trading or cutting him either. It will either be ok we will pay you that next year or they will try to get him a restructured deal, either way he will be an Eagles. And that is a fact

Can you say “Steve Smith”? This Guy has been playing 13+ years in the NFL and is still going very strong. Desean will have the same, and much much better sucess in this league with the Eagles. He will be to us what Steve Smith is to Carolina. I cant see Chip kelley letting go of any of the speed we have on the field, and that starts with Desean.

That is exactly what I have been thinking about lately. If they draft someone high, then that guy is gonna play opposite D-Jax, so what happens to Cooper?

Any Rookie WR Drafted will take at least 1 to 2 Seasons before making an impat and being a Starter playing 60-70 Snaps a Game..
They Will Draft a WR and groom him a year or two to learn the NFL Game,
meanwhile D-Jax & Cooper are the Starters moving forward

Drafting Allen Robinson in the 1st is a must. He is a sure thing.

There is no such thing as a “sure thing” with any Top or 1st Round Draft Pick or any Draft Pick at all for that matter .. Some pan out, some don’t.. some are mature, responsible, coachable and have that self burning desire to excell and learn while others are are immature, reckless and lack that sense of urgency that is required to be an NFL Player in terms of conditioning, Smarts, preparation, Teamwork, weight control, etc, etc …
You never really know until they get out on the Field..

I think DeSean Jackson will be back next year. He might not be the prototypical #1 WR but he demands double coverage, and he is important to the Eagles offense.

Dont forget that Maclin is comming back next year. he will need a bunch of games to get his legs and trust his knee again, but I think in this offense he will be deadly next to desean.

Guys I would love to see DJax here next year but 10 mil is a lot to pay for a guy off one great season…. It only takes a couple of bad games next year for everyone to say i knew we shoulda traded this guy away when he was hot!!!! Also Eagles are the worst at restructuring deals and thats just to say if DJax agrees with it. Again i would love to see him here and if we do draft a true number 1 receiver next year is 10 mil really what you want to pay for a number 2 WR?!?!?!?!??!

i think desean has had 2 great seasons (this year and rookie year), i would characterize his sophmore season as good but not great (met expectations but didnt exceed). his last 3 years prior to this season were way below average for him and for a number 1.

Djax has had a very good year. Maclin I don’t see coming back next year since there has already been Talk of him in KC. I think he gets a good contract there. I saw two On that free Agent list that I would be interested in. 1st Choice Decker, Big Fast, great hands a good compliment to Djax. The 2nd choice I would give is Jones from Green Bay Runs good routes Big Not as fast as decker but good hands still…He just gets injured too much. We dont sign One of those two then we Draft Evans From A&M or Robinson from PSU. Both will be good pros.

Eagles need to start to replace the 30 year old Offensive Lineman and their 4-3 Defensive ends masquerading as 3-4 OLB with draft picks with their High draft choices next year.

Year after year I hear the likes of Pman an others talk about how 2012 will be his last…. i mean 2013….. i mean….. I have stated over and over again that a guy like Djax gives you the kind of speed you are looking for in both the Andy Reid and Chip Kelly O. With his speed he opens things up and creates room for the other guys on the field.

He is not a “1 trick pony” as i’ve heard here over and over. He is not “going to wear down soon”… he is a legit target on every play… even in the red zone IF they to were to use him in a trips formation or from the backfield.

Is he a #1 WR? I believe this term “#1 WR” to be much like the “franchise qb” term…. a little over analysed and misunderstood. I believe Jaws a few years ago said that there are only 3 or so #1 WR’s in the league so…. u can basically throw that out all together. What matter is…… he has found a way to be a GREAT WR even without the BOMBS AWAY playcalling of the past.

Of Course D-Jax is back next Season, he is under Contract and a will make $12.5 MIllion in 2014 and $12 in 2015 and $12 Million in 2016

Eagles will release WR J Avant and use his 2014 $4 MIllion Salary to Re-Sign WR Cooper and make a 1 Year Offer to Maclin, who will not accept, and leave to sign a 3 Year Deal with th KC Chiefs and reunite with Coach AR

Correction on D-Jax’s Deal

2014 – $12.5 Million
2015 – $12 Million
2016 – $10 Million

D-Jax is going nowhere with his playmaking ability and his leadership and team committment that he has shown under Chip Kelly..
I do belive that perhaps before the 2015 Season, that they may ask him to re-structure his deal to spread some same $$$ over a longer Contract but they are not going to ask him after this Season to restructure..

And for the Record, I have only stated that D-Jax would be a Goner due to his Poor Attitude and Quitting on his Team that he displayed in 2011 & 2012, but Since Kelly has arrived, D-Jax has been a model Teammate and still the biggest Playmaker the Team has demonstrated maturity and leadership that was lacking before Kelly’s arrival..

Chip Kelly loves speed – DJax gets his cash for 2014.
Riley Cooper returning is more uncertain. Riley has to go for the most money up front, which might not be in the Eagles best interest.

D. jackson will b back 2014. end of story. his stats this year speak for themselves, but lets talk about the things that dont show up on stat sheets, like the rolled coverage he demands every game which allows cooper to dominate 1 on 1 matchups. or the good field position weve enjoyed all season long by featuring him in the punt game, although he has not had a good return all seasons punters are giving us great field position trying to kick away from him. or how bout shady having space to move bcuz that safety cannot come down in the box……

I would not be surprised at all if Djax redoes his deal to help Philly bring in some players. I think they are doing a good job of building a core group of leaders and Djax seems to be stepping up.

No free agent WR’s coming this off season. I thought perhaps they would land one in a trade but… perhaps JMak returns.. but I dont see a stud coming in when we need OT’s and DE’s and S’s.

Eagles 2014 WR Corps

1) D-Jax
2) Riley Cooper
3) Jason Avant
4) Donte Moncrief (2nd Round Draft Pick from Ole Miss (6-2 226lbs)
5) Paulman (5-8 190lbs , quick in and out of routes, strong, good hips, with a high Football IQ, bottom line, a Winner.. kind of like a poor man’s Justin Edelmen..

The interesting question about the WR corp. has nothing to do with DJax ( I mean the Eagles paid Vick $12M-$13M this year knowing full well that t he wouldn’t play a whole season. It’s really Riley Cooper vs. Jeremy Maclin vs. Jason Avant. The team would be foolish not to give Maclin a new deal and equally foolish to get involved in the bidding war that will come for Cooper based on one decent season and they could probably keep Avant without a huge contract, but I’m curious to see how the Eagles maneuver this situation.

DJax is just a normal piece of the Eagles’ game plan. AJ Green, Megatron, Marshall all get like double the balls force thrown their way. DJax is just more efficient with the ball thrown his way. He catches almost everything Foles throws him and for like 17 yards per reception. The speedster makes the most out of his opportunity. He has comparable yardage as the league leaders with like half the passing targets.
