McNabb’s Wednesday News Conference

Donovan McNabb faced some tough questions about his status as a starter, why he has been playing poorly, what's wrong with the team and his future with the Eagles.   Check out his answered all the tough questioning from the media.

QB Donovan McNabb Press Conference

11-7-07

On what has to change this week:

“We have to win. That’s the only answer that you can give. We have to win. You have to do whatever it takes in order to get a win. It’s a must-win situation, and that has to be the mindset all throughout the week- to get out on the field and make any play that’s possible to win the game.”

On whether he’s concerned about his job status:

“No, I’m not. I guess it was just a story created for you guys [the media]. I can’t overly exert my energy on trying to figure out if I’ll be here or not, or whatever the situation may be. My job is to be ready for Washington, go out, have a great game, and week-in and week-out do the same.”

On how he feels about people calling for QB Kevin Kolb to play:

“It doesn’t bother me at all. A lot of people in the situation we’re in, the guy who gets criticized the most, and the guy who may not get the most credit for what goes on, is the quarterback. Obviously, it doesn’t help that we drafted one, now that it’s easy to sit and say, ‘It’s time for change.’ But, my job is to make sure that I’m prepared at all times, and get ready to step out on that field and make plays. If people continue to talk about it, hey, if they feel it’s helping them vent and get some stuff off of their chest, that’s great. But, when I’m in this building, I’m prepared to be the guy and go out there and help us win games.”

On whether he feels he takes too much of the blame when things are going bad:

“I do. Again, it’s easy to blame a quarterback when the team loses, but I’m definitely not the whole reason why we lost these games. Can I help? Yes I can, but I’m not fully [to] blame for everything that goes on around here.”

On whether he’s a solution to the problem:

“I can help, but I’m not the main solution. I’m a piece of the puzzle, and when the puzzle’s put together, then we’ll have success.”

On how he can be more helpful:

“Well, we all have to play well. We all have to do our jobs individually. If we all step up and do our job, then we wouldn’t be sitting here right now [at 3-5]. But, I’m definitely not the single reason for what’s going on right now.”

On how he thinks he has played thus far:

“I’m not happy about the way I’ve played. I can’t sit here and say that I am happy. I have to do my job; I have to do my job better, and everyone else has to, as well. If we all do that, then we’ll be where we want to be at the end, hopefully.”

On whether the team has to play perfect in order to win games:

“I don’t know if we all have to be perfect, but we all have to do our jobs better. If that leads us to being perfect, then I guess so. If we all do our jobs a lot better than we have [been doing], then we can win the game.”

On whether he expected to struggle coming off of his knee surgery:

“No, I try to stay positive in everything that I do, mentally and physically. No, I didn’t see this coming; I didn’t see this happening. Like I said, [there were] a lot of things that I thought I’d be in a position to do, but just wasn’t able to do early. It’s progressively getting better and coming back, but looking at what we’ve done so far, I’m definitely not excited about it. [I] look forward to making a change in a way that we can look back on it at the end of the season and say, ‘You know what, everybody changed, stepped up, and we made plays when we had to.’”

On whether it has been more difficult reading coverages due to the time he missed last year:

“Not at all.”

On whether this team is not as good as he initially thought:

“We still feel we have a good team, and there’s no reason for us to say this isn’t a good team. This is a good team. We have a lot of young guys stepping in key roles, and veterans who have been playing in their position for years. Again, we all have to do our job. If we all do our job the way we’re supposed to, things will work themselves out. We have to set the tone at some point, and it has to happen now. It’s got to be a must-win situation in your mind to go out there and do the job right now.”

On how he handles knowing that quarterbacks take more blame:

“You just let it roll off, and I’ve been doing that for years. You just let it roll off. You take the good, listen to the bad- whatever the bad may be- [and] learn from it and move on. That’s the situation you go through. Playing the quarterback position, it happens. Everyone goes through it. You can’t let it bother you because you have to have a short-term memory. You have to go through your situation, learn from it, and be able to move on.”

On whether there is as much talent on this offense as there was several years ago:

“[That’s] hard to say.”

On whether he feels he is playing for his job:

“No, I don’t.”

On whether he would support a coach’s decision to start QB Kevin Kolb:

“No, that’s my job. Why would I just want to give my job up? Would you like to give your job up?”

On what he is specifically doing wrong right now:

“There are a lot of mistakes I’ve made. [Whether] it’s throws I want back, [bad] decisions, whatever it may be, there are mistakes that I’ve made in every game- a lot of things that you’re not used to doing, a lot of things that you know you can do better. Everybody makes mistakes. But, in this situation, there’s no room for error, and that goes for each individual person. There’s no room for error.”

On whether he’d support the coach making changes at other positions:

“I think with the guys we have in the positions, we can get the job done.”

On whether he has to play perfect in order for the team to win:

“I’m a piece of a puzzle. If I do my job, and everyone else does their job, then we’ll win the game. If I go out and play a perfect game but we still lose, then it doesn’t matter. This game is about wins and losses. I don’t care if I go out and pass for 100-yards, we rush for 100-yards, but win by seven. The most important thing about it is that we win.”

On whether he expected the team to ask less of him due to the fact that he was coming off of an injury:

“I just run the offense that’s called. I prepare all through the week to know what I’m going to be seeing, the play that’s called. If I feel that we can execute that play, I just run the play that’s called. So, whatever offense they ran last year, I wasn’t in it. Things have changed from last year, and I know that- everybody knows that. It’s not for me to say ‘Well, if I ran that offense last year, we would have success now.’ It’s a different offense, it’s a different personnel [group]- some of the same people, but it’s a different year.”

On what specifically has changed from last year:

“I wasn’t playing in the last couple of games last year. They ran the ball more. [WR] Kevin [Curtis] was just brought over here, whatever it may be. It’s a different team.”

On whether he feels like he’ll still be with the Eagles for years to come:

“I do. I’m sure you probably won’t write that, but I do.”

On why he feels like he’ll still be here:

“Everyone goes through some ups and downs. All quarterbacks do. [Green Bay Packers QB] Brett Favre went through it; other quarterbacks have. This is a situation which, if you continue to build, do you start over? It’s not my decision, but I expect to be here.”

I am commenting to let you know of the fine encounter my friend’s daughter found reading your site. She figured out numerous issues, not to mention what it’s like to have a wonderful giving mindset to have men and women quite simply have an understanding of selected hard to do subject areas. You really exceeded our expectations. Many thanks for giving the insightful, safe, explanatory and as well as easy thoughts on the topic to Janet.
