A nervous anticipation continues to build as we inch closer to the 2015 NFL draft. Between statements delivered by Chip Kelly and Ed Marynowitz, every single roster spot has room for improvement.
As it stands the Eagles have eight total selections. They also have a few players like Boykins, Curry and Kendricks (I see Mathis staying with the Eagles) who could be used for additional picks or for Chip to move up in the draft.
There are really two draft scenarios. The first is an answered prayer that a “blockbuster” deal for Mariota goes down. The second, once the Mariota era is over before it ever had a chance to begin, we return to our draft charts and hope Chip starts to upgrade the holes on this roster.
I think there is an agreement across the board with the fan base; the number one need for the Eagles is a starting safety opposite of Jenkins.
Safety
There are two key factors that make it difficult to judge the “safety” position; the incoming draft class lacks depth and how does Chip view the safety position. I believe a decision on whether Jaylen Watkins is a safety or a cornerback comes down to what the Eagles come away with after the draft. If other teams end up “reaching” for potential safeties like Randall (ASU), Rowe (Utah) and even Rollins (Miami) Ohio, I feel Chip would then add to the cornerback position and move Watkins to safety.
The Eagles have shown interest in Amos from Penn State, but I’d be more inclined to use our 2014 4th round pick (Watkins) with a year in the system versus a guy straight out of college.
Cornerback, wide receiver and offensive line are three other position groups that also need to be upgraded.
Offensive Line
Kelly is very high on both Barbre and Tobin as potential starters for the upcoming season. Could you imagine if the Eagles were to either trade or release Mathis and both of these guys are starters? I really like the depth of the offensive line in the draft, and see many guys who fit what Chip likes, as far as size, athleticism and the experience playing multiple positions.
I think the Eagles could realistically wait until day three of the draft to address the offensive line if they really think they have potential starters in Barbre and Tobin. It’s hard to fully judge who was at fault with so many different offensive line starting line-ups in 2014, this is a position group that relies so much on timing, trust and recognition of assignment.
The Eagles could really benefit from finding a guy who can start at guard this upcoming season and then transition over to tackle when Lane Johnson takes over for Peters at the left tackle spot.
Wide Receiver
Is the current Eagle wide receiver core the weakest it’s been since drafting Desean Jackson in 2008?
Is there anyone on the roster that an opposing defensive coach has to game plan for?
Jordan Matthews has a “nice” all-around game, but he views himself as a complimentary player, which is fine, I’ll take 75 receptions for close to 1100 yards and 8-10 touchdowns which I project he will register this season.
How much can be expected of Josh Huff? I have no idea; there wasn’t much to reflect on from his rookie season. I “anticipated” that his rookie learning curve would be far less than other players because of the relationship with him and Chip, which is a “reason” I excused the Eagles reaching in the third round to select him.
Well, I was wrong, between an injury that lingered from the preseason and some costly turnovers, Huff looked like his mind was going a million miles a second when on the football field.
Projecting what Huff “may” do, (50-55 catches)expectations for Matthews after a productive rookie year, the “next” step for Ertz, using Sproles in the passing game and any type of contribution from Cooper and Austin, what role will a rookie play in the passing game?
Speed, this offense needs a wide receiver that can stretch the field, similar to the role M. Bryant played for the Steelers last season. Two guys come to mind, Perriman(UCF) round 1 and Conley(UGA) in round 3. I know the Eagles have shown some interest in former Hurricane Phillip Dorsett, but it’s difficult for me to believe Chip would draft a “smaller” wide-receiver, although there was interest in Cooks during the 2014 draft.
I would take 40-45 catches for 650-750 and 5 touchdowns from my rookie wide receiver. I expect the Eagles to run the football more, and with the increased role of the other receivers on the roster, these are reasonable statistics that could be expected.
Cornerback
I really like the depth at cornerback throughout the draft, plenty of talent and potential; although I don’t believe there are as many “NFL” ready corners as the 2014 class.
The Eagles cornerback position at the moment looks a bit crowded, but all of that changes after the 2015 season. If Thurmond can stay healthy and produce, he could certainly earn an extension, and take over the vacated “slot” role that Boykins will leave behind. If Watkins does end up over at safety, the Eagles will need to address who is starting opposite of Maxwell.
So what would a seven round draft look like that would please “most” Eagle fans?
I need a safety, or I’m starting Watkins at safety. I’d rather not “reach” for a guy, and instead take best available cornerback.
I need a wide receiver that is able to get on the football field the way that Matthews did last year, and not struggle like Huff.
I need a “mean-tempered” offensive lineman that is going to mix it up at the end of the plays.
Positions such as tight-end, running back and quarterback (not named Mariota) I’d rather not waste picks on, sign a bunch of undrafted free agents.
It’s really hard to project what Chip is going to do with his first draft where he is calling all of the shots. I don’t believe Eagle fans are going to give up on the potential Mariota trade even if another team drafts him in the first few picks, the anticipation will continue the remainder of round 1 that a deal could still be in play.
I’ve watched every pick in every round since the 1994 NFL draft.
Never, was I this unsure of what direction the Eagles were heading in like I am for the 2015 NFL draft.
I think the Eagles will stay put, and draft a wide receiver.
Sam Bradford is capable of winning a super bowl in Kelly’s offense if he stays healthy. I think any “good” quarterback can win in the Eagles system. Bradford has the potential to be better than a “good” quarterback, in Kelly’s eyes. He could be right…
I would love to see Mariota come to Philadelphia in the draft, but I don’t think it will happen. And the reality is – Bradford was a much higher rated QB coming out of collage than Mariota is. So, it’s not a lock that Mariota will be better…. I guess.
I think the top 4 (Perriman being #4) will be off the board by the time the Eagles make their pick at #20.
Who would be your next three guys?
Doriel Green – Beckham, Jaylen Strong, and Tre McBride
If he wants to move up – SCREW MARIOTA, He will be a bust in the NFL – go up and get Amari Cooper

I like DGB the more I learn about him.. He’s made some bonehead decisions as many 18-19 Year Olds do, no doubt, but he comes from a nice Family, seems humble about his past mistakes and is not the Thug that many think..
He’s very raw and has a lot to learn about Route Running, Using his size to his advantage etc,etc and it’s going to take a Season or Two before he shines at the NFL Level

Jeff, Valles is fast off of the snap and knows how to get to the QB, He has coverage skills and is physical. Teams may be scared off because of his 40 combine time 4.80, I would not let that deter me, MSII had a nice 40 time, what good did that do?
Valles needs some more polish, but, he will be a game changer if he takes to coaching and strength and conditioning. Nothing in his past says that he will not.

Chris Mortensen was on with Anthony Gargano this morning. Mortensen said nobody would give the Eagles a #1 pick for Bradford if Bradford won’t sign an extension with that team – not even the Browns….. And he don’t think Bradford would agree to sign with anyone, including the Eagles.

My own two cents – and I do not follow college players – the Eagles will actually trade back and try and collect more draft picks – I think they hold onto all those players mentioned as trade bait – Boykin will man the slot – Kendricks will be a hybrid ILB/OLB and bounce all over the formation to use his speed – plus now you have 3 quality ILBs and 3 quality OLBs (assuming Graham makes the jump to starter)
I think the draft focuses on 1)OL (mathis and peters getting older – competition at RG) 2) WR – I think you see two drafted) – 3) DB
in later rounds will add depth and competition at DL/OL and OLB
If the Eagles take a QB in draft I think it is Hundley in the 3rd round – all the ‘tools’ physically and he can hold the clipboard for two years behind whoever until he gets a chance – I really don’t think they draft a QB –
I think Chip is going to be very content to be a horizontal passing primarily running football team – he wants 2 and 6 3rd and 3 so teams have to watch both run and pass – Shady making 2 and 6 into 3rd an 9 wasn’t cutting it –
Bradford had some success his rookie season with Steven Jackson getting the ball a bunch and carrying the load – let the 3 RBs and short passing game carry the load, keep him healthy – for that reason the OL is very important –

Once a Player is Drafted in the NFL, they Rarely ever return a Pick equivalent or higher to when they were Selected unless they become a Stud/All-Pro Type which Kendricks is not.. Its like Buying a New Car and leaving the Lot,

We have the top running back leader to replace shady and will not be losing yardage behind the line of scrimmage with all the juking instead of hitting it up to the line of scrimmage when nothings there.

LB’s – Overall An Improvement with a healthy Kiko Alonso and a highly motivated Brandon Graham playing with Barwin, Ryans and Possibly Kendricks.. More Depth is needed and a make or break Season for Marcus Smith II who must prove that he belongs in the NFL
Secondary – Overall Improvement
CB – With Additions of Maxwell & Thurmond who will have Nolan Carroll, J Watkins and Brandon Boykin all in the mix for Playing Time (Eagles will add 1 or 2 CB’s in the Draft and probably end up Trading Boykin over Draft Weekend)
Safety – Malcolm Jenkins and a Wide Open Battle for Wolf,Reynolds, Couplin and Watkins along with a Draft Pick
I like Jerome Couplin to win the Battle to open alongside of Jenkins
I believe Earl Wolf gets released and a Safety is Drafted to battle but likely be a Back-Up for 2015
Special Teams Demons Maragos and Prosinski will battle it out for the Final Safety Spot, 1 will make the Team, the Other will be Cut
Maragos has the more Experience, Prosinski is more athletic and cheaper on the Payroll… A good battle to watch all Summer Long

Point is kellys suspect moves have left all of us scratching out heads a time or two. I was on board with the Foles trade two minutes after it was done…maybe a half hour, same with DJAX…both players had a lot of statistical success with Kelly but he sees it differently than we do. We have no choice but go along and see if it works.

There are 2 separate issues, and you guys keep mixing them together.

Greg Robinson struggled mightily last year. Quinn imploded under a new contract….Long is up for a new contract and almost out the door. They have not draft a true impact offensive weapon(Tavon Austin shows flash but nowhere near a no.1 talent). Their offensive line is still a mess.
