Jahlil Okafor: “Winning has always been my main focus”

JahlilFranco6Rookie Sixers center/power forward Jahlil Okafor doesn’t need to change his approach to the game.  Here in Philly with all the losing that’s been done by the 76ers recently, we need somebody who helps this team do some winning.  The rookie said all the right things at his first news conference in the city.

“Winning has always been my main focus,” Okafor said during his first Philadelphia news conference. “I have always hated losing. I am a sore loser. I do not take losing well. I have always been about winning because I have been winning my entire life.

“I am excited to be here, and start winning some games. I have already walked around the city. I can see that the fans are so excited and so enthusiastic. It makes you feel really good, and you can’t imagine what it will be like when we start winning.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how Okafor reacts to the losing.  Hopefully he’ll be able to weather the storm and convince the rest of his teammates that they can win.

Okafor won a NCAA in his only season at Duke and he plans on continuing his winning ways now that he’s a 76er.  Philadelphia will love this young man’s attitude. He did a great job of scoring and passing from the low post a year ago, which helped his Blue Devils teammates get in position to shoot open three-pointers.

Should be Fun to watch Okafor/Noel’s & Embiid develop and play off each other
Hopefully they can all remain healthy to give the 76ers a lot of Options as the move forward… Now get a young True PG and another Shooter to go with Covington, Wroten and Saric for 2016-2017 Season and the 76ers will be on upswing..

He is an absolute study and the Sixers were fortunate to end up in a position to draft him

I was going to post Jahlil’s quotes about winning today but you beat me to it GCobb!

For him to come out and say emphatically that he’s won at every level of his life HS College and plans to continue the winning at the next level and that he doesn’t take winning well, my ears perked up

I like that they brought a young guy in that is accustomed to winning. Before Jahlil we didn’t have not 1 guy that comes from a winning culture

Our wins should go up and..

Wouldn’t it be great if we were able to sign Kahwi Leonard?!

I’d be ecstatic!

The fact that Noel’s got injured has little to do with the fact he came from a Winning Background.. He choose Kentucky for a chance to Win a National Championship and Won at the High School & AAU Level so he’s used to being in a Winning Environment similar to Okafor..

Paul and JH yet another stupid argument ‘who comes from a winning culture and who doesn’t’ STUPID — let’s see 7 foot AAU studs, recruited by every top college , end up at duke and Kentucky (could have any one of a dozen others) have won a shitload of games since 3rx grade. Noel has probably lost more games these last two years than the rest of his life combined!

No argument from me HAC,
Just pointing out that JH was wrong in stating that Okafor is the only Player on the 76ers Roster from a Winning Background/Culture… Nerlen Noel’s has a similar background and also comes from a Winning Background and just because he was injured and missed the end of his only Season with Kentucky doesn’t change that..

NBA DRAFT WEEK!!!

LET’S GO!!!

Alot of rumors floating around
Porzingis, Russell, Mudiay etc etc

I still want Mudiay, I do like Russell too though, I just don’t like left handed players and I don’t like his inability to defend at this point of his career but he will grow.

I think Mudiay is a better defender, more athletic and a better scorer than Russell

Russell does set his teammates up better than Mudiay and has better court vision

I do not want another big man but if Okafor is there at 3, do you really pass on him?

All that talent, 7’0 7’1… I’d rather a playmaking guard but Okafor can ball

I also like Mario Hezonja. 6’8 long, athletic, can score the ball, can shoot the 3. 1 thing he has to work on is taking guys off the dribble better

I’m back and forth on Porzingis. Hes gonna be a good player but I don’t like how stiff he is. I think it would be a bad idea to take him 3 because he’s developmental

I don’t think he’s Dirk Nowitzki or will ever be but maybe pretty close…

Those are my guys so far thru my evaluation
Still early in the week..

Sixers have options as always..

Just don’t count out the chance that we trade our picks for next year and get more picks and or trade picks for a star player

I’d be just fine if we traded for Paul George. Hes a great all around player that’s young and his potential meter is going up not down. Or try to get a guy like Durant etc

Acquiring all these picks (four 1st rounders next season) gives you this kind of flexibility

JH I would do a backflip for Leonard however he isnt leaving San Antonio. They are about to reload with at minimun Aldridge or Gasol and their is a chance they could actually do both if Ginobilli retires.

Realistically target Lawson in a trade and see if they could structure Jimmy Butler with a Front loaded contract on a 1+1 deal that the Bulls cant max without moving players.

I think B.Brown had a lot to do with the development of Kahwi Leonard and how I know is because of how much of a complete player he is.

He doesn’t just score the ball but he is one of the best on ball defenders in the league. He didn’t walk into the nba like this, he had to develop this

I can assume that him and B.Brown have a very good relationship.

I don’t think that Lamarcus Aldridge would keep him from coming to a team like Philly who has all these big men and money and draft picks coming

The Sixers will try I believe but he’s a restricted FA

He fits the mold of player that B.Brown wants and needs badly

he has quite a few million reasons to get over it and he will. He was the most coveted player in the draft all winter… its great he fell to them, he is their one true building block from the eternal tank (i’m interested to see more Saric tho) – i really think the bad wheel that Embid brings to the table is going to keep rearing its ugly head. Noel i think will be a solid pro — time to start winning, no more tanking… learn to win, learn to build– lets see brown coach — we know he can teach–

I don’t think they’re gonna tank for Simmons

I think this year is the year they establish an identity and win more games, next year they make the playoffs and we’ll stop there for now

I saw glimpses of a good team this past season, obviously not every game but a few of them definitely

I don’t think we’re that far off. We definitely need a scorer or two and a gang of shooters since we have a post presence

But I see us working to build off of what we already have on the current roster, Covington stays, Ish is a good backup that has the ability to start but needs to improve his shooting

We have Noel, Okafor and Embiid, hopefully down the not so distant future. Just need scorers and more shooters

We’re building the Spurs of the east

I love it!!!

60 million under the cap. Okafor and Noel. 4 1st round picks. Saric comining in one more year.If any fan thinks Hinke is going backwards from this point is crazy. Hinke understands the time is now. He knows Brown wont go for it. He knows players like Okafor wont go for it. He knows the fans aren’t going to go for it. All the trades and dumping are over. Embid will probably have some kind of surgery and sit this year IMO. That’s ok. It is what it is. The Sixers will be the next team to contend for a championship in this city.

cant trade embiid period for several reasons.

1. his trade value is sooooo low and nobody would give up shit for him right now.

2. the guy is an athletic freak, you see him doing through the legs windmill jams??????

3. cutting bait with a guy with superstar talent before he is even 21 is absolutely retarded. Id rather see him here and have confirmation he will never be medically oK then to see him go somewhere else and be one of the best bigs in the game.

Bottom line is im praying this man is gonna get that foot 100% and if and when he does we are gonna be a fucking force with him and okafor and future guards… Big Jah gonna dominate this league – and is the favorite for ROY, Noel is a defensive star and Embiid has the talent to be the 2nd best big in the game behind unibrow.

You wouldn’t be able to trade Embiid until he proved to be healthy, and capable.

But if he was both, then it would be more beneficial to trade Noel to attain additional assets with 4 – 1st round picks, and millions under the cap to sign max free agents…

I’d rather have Olajuwon type potential, than Noel’s – who is strictly a shot blocker, who I’d already have with Okafor who has more scoring ability..

Young, Up and Coming Players would be interested in Philly for they can
can a Max Deal since the 76ers have a ton of $$$$ available and would have a great Opportunity for more Playing Time and be a Top Player on the Team as opposed to a 2nd/3rd or 4th Option on the Teams that they are presently on.. Could Butler, Bledsoe, Rondo, Rivers, etc,etc raise their Visibility and Brand by being the Top Dog for a Rebuilding 76ers Team more so than staying where they are …

Realistic FAs I think they should look at are Patrick Beverly and Danny Green. Beverly is absolutely the best on ball defender at the PG position and together with the rest of the athletes on this squad defensively that would be a great fit. I prefer Green over Kris Middleton just because of the system he is coming from and think he would be a great vet to have around these young kids. However Middleton has more upside.

Danny Green just does not play strong enough Defense though he can light them up from the outside and would be a nice addition for some Offensive Scoring off the Wings..

Didn’t these Players Play and Win a couple of Stanley Cups with the Kings
while the Flyers have failed to have much Post-Season Success since
Richards and Carter were Traded

2014-2015 Season – No Playoffs
2013-2014 Season – Lost in 1st Round of Playoffs to NY Rangers
2012-2013 Season – No Playoffs
2011-2012 Season – Lost in 2nd Round of Playoffs to NJ Devils
2010-2011 Season – Lost in 2nd Round of Playoffs to Bruins

richards has declined every year since we traded him. he played ok when the kings won it in 2012 but was not even close to worth the 12 year deal for the kings, when they won in 2014 he was invisible almost the entire year. last year richards was an embarrassment, at only age 30 and with 5 years and 35+million still owed to him he played so bad they sent him to the minors. and now it looks like his hockey career is on the ropes…

carter has produced a bit but is a 1 way player… we got some nice players for those 2 coke sniffing bums.and those 2 are still signed through 2020+ and owed 10’s of millions.

NBA Free Agency starts at 12:01 a.m

Let’s see what Hinkie wants to do

Offer Kahwi the Max and hope he accepts?

Go after both Kahwi and Jimmy Butler?!

Show restraint?!

We do know that they have interest in Butler and I can almost guarantee they have interest in Kahwi but they’re both restricted guys

But these guys could definitely have interest in coming here because they’d automatically be “the guys”

If we could sign 1 of them we’d be one step closer to being a contending team

I think drafting Noel, Embiid and Okafor makes the Sixers an attractive destination for free agents and if we can get these guys on the court to showcase their skills man o man it would be just what we needed!

New training facility coming next year

I look forward to free agency moving forward because I think Hinkie will start to try and hit . No more sitting on your hands

You have 3 bigs

Build inside out

Go get a a few shooters and scorers!

I think this years free agency and next year’s are crucial for this franchise moving forward

Realistically who out there outside of Leonard and Butler are fits for this team that make sense.

I’m sorry but the money being thrown at guys like Middleton and Carroll I want no part of.

Carroll was literally playing to stay in the league last year. Middleton has come out of nowhere as well.

What they show is investing in guys you see talent in and giving them playing time and room to grow is the way to go.

Some of you make no sense and its obvious you arent following the league. There are some nice vets out there that after the dust settles you may overpay for a year or two to come here. Gives you the opportunity to have a vet and if they play well a trade chip to a contender down the line. The Gary Neals or Mo Williams type.

Look whats out there Monta Ellis? Rondo?

Youre better off going after a Spurs backup in Cory Joseph or if the Lakers need to unload salary maybe taking Clarkson off their hands(not very realistic though). Serviceable guys will shake loose even if just to come here for a year to rehab their game. RELAX already.

What Hinkie got rid of were either cap friendly bums like Hawes and Lavoy allen; traded bust Evan Turner; traded a very good, but not great Jrue that netted us Nerlens; and good but not great Thad that netted us the Heat pick. he’s the best GM in this town. It ain’t even close. The Phillies have turned into the laughing stock of baseball under to current GM; the eagles GM hasn’t learned that being a great coach doesn’t mean you know shit about being a GM; and I could care less about the flyers there fans drink more kool-aid than anybody.

Carroll Green Middleton Tobias Harris later….all guys that show let players get minutes and you can develop talent even if its not lottery guys.

We could be saying the same thing about Grant Sampson etc.

Green owes his career to Brett Brown and Spurs player development.

Tobias Harris couldnt get minutes in Milwaukee under Scott Skiles goes to a bad Magic team…extended minutes and he develops as a player.

Middleton as well.

Orlando Magic have been absolute doodoo for 3 years stockpiling talent and giving extended playing time to guys.

After 3 years and with a somewhat solid backcourt Vucevic at the 5 they know swing for the fence for Paul Milsap. A mid tier AllStar but a nice piece.

But how many people remember them attempting to play Olidapo at PG and realize that Aaron Gordon looks like a flop.

Or that they get rid of Affalo and Nelson and pretty much did no different than the Sixers?

The biggest difference….that when they stripped bare they actually had some young players like Vucevic etc. The Sixers had absolutely NOTHING after that horrendous Bynum trade.

Their lone asset had stress fractures and they flipped for 2 no.1s.

Things are just fine right now.

IzzellJenkins

July 1, 2015 8:11 pm

Team growth does not just mean wins. I want to see player development and style of play developed.

Being the 8th in the East is like being the prettiest whore in the brothel…in the end you’re still a whore.

The Celtics panicking over the draft and signing Amir Johnson to 12mil is why you have to rip down.

I can see 25 wins at best with what they currently have. And honestly I could care less about that number. What do want to see is an offense built around the low post and firm grasp on who compliments each other out of the three and then remaining asset used to acquire other talent.
If we have two true building blocks by the end of this year with what they have draft pick wise and cap I will be very happy.

I think Okafor and Noel will be those blocks.

Turner was the 2 pick and holiday was lottery so wtf difference does it make? Assets have to pay dividends at some point… They don’t have a PG and MCW is going to net you the let’s say 12-15 pick next year, and you still do t have a PG. @ Bugs…. If you won’t, I will. This is an NBA players get too much post. NBA players are way overpaid. There is no way in the world Draymond Green deserves that kind of money. No one, not even fans in Oakland, go to Warriors games to see him play. If they got rid of him tomorrow people may feel sad, however they will show up regardless because of Curry and Thompson. Green is a solid role player, but in my mind he is in the same category as a Lance Stevenson. Solid role player, nothing more. I’m not saying he has not contributed, I just think he’s paid way too much for what he can do.

Outside of Anthony Davis, the other players seemed overpaid seeing that most of them are just role players.

Not only that, if the Sixers hit on one of these big men (or all three) it may be trouble paying them down the road. If Embiid gets healthy and turns out to be a stud along with Okafor and possibly Noel, we won’t be able to afford all three and our nucleus goes flying out the window. These teams just set the market for role players, I can’t imagine what superstars will demand going forward.

@Bugs…Draymond Green is worth that kind of money to Warriors. He is the reason they able to create so many mismatches on the floor. Granted their backcourt is the spoon that stirs the rest of the ingredients but Green lets all their pieces flow great because of his ability to defend and score.

Outside of GSW it would be a mistake to give him that money. Same goes for Tristan Thompson in Cleveland. For the Cavs he is worth that money. For any other team no way.

Green was 2nd in DPOY voting and honestly he should have won it. In the playoffs he was exposed a bit in the Finals however he absolutely held his own and was a key piece in defending.
