We all know that the key to any franchise’s success is tied to the quarterback. So that’s why I couldn’t help but pay some attention to former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback and now ESPN NFL analyst Mark Brunell, when he cut to the chase and offered his opinion regarding whether he believes Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is going to succeed in the NFL
“I do not,” Brunell said. “From what I’ve seen the last couple of years. He burst onto the scene and that was impressive, but like I said, he has gone backwards. It’s not just his decision-making, it’s his fundamentals. He’s taking too many hits, he’s quick to get out of the pocket. Last year was difficult to watch. Does he have the skill set? Yes, but we haven’t seen it in some time.”
I think RGIII will play better if the Skins running game dominates. That’s what happened his rookie season and he was able to make quite a few big plays off of play action passes. I don’t think he can carry them by executing the Skins pass offense from the pocket. He must develop in this area in order to be a top NFL quarterback. He can’t do it with his legs.
ESPN’s Redskins beat reporter John Keim had good things to say about how Griffin has looked this off season. The coaches say he’s doing a better job of going through his progressions and getting the ball to his second, third and fourth receivers. They say he’s throwing the football with more confidence. Obviously, it’s a lot easier to do that without the pads on and with no pressure coming at you from pass rushers.
Last year, RGIII started seven games. The Skins were 2-5 in those seven games. He completed 68.7% of his throws, yet he threw for only four touchdowns with six interceptions for a 86.9 quarterback rating.
Right now, RGIII is a question mark and for that reason, the Redskins are a question mark.
