Chip Kelly Praises Eagles Offense, But Didn’t Like Defensive Penalties

Chip Kelly’s news conference started out with a Tim Tebow question.  The head coach was quick to praise him.  He said he’s seen improvement in Tebow’s throwing motion and said Tebow’s accuracy has also improved.  Kelly said this is a big week for Tebow.

Kelly was very positive about the play of backup offensive lineman Dennis Kelly.  The Eagles head coach said Kelly has been very consistent at both guard and tackle and that he fits very well into what they do.  Kelly said this has been the young offensive lineman’s best Training Camp. Kelly finished by saying he’s a big big Dennis fan.

Kelly praised tight end Trey Burton, who caught two touchdowns against the Packers.  Burton’s outstanding Special Teams play was the reason he made the team a year ago, now Kelly is using him more as a tight end with Zach Ertz sidelines.  Kelly pointed out the fact that Burton didn’t play tight end at University of Florida.

Kelly praised Birds tight end Brent Celek, him “underrated in many ways”.  The coach said Celek’s value is huge to the team. The Birds head coach said Celek could be the best blocking TE in NFL.  I’m sure Celek’s agent is taping this news conference and will save the video tape for the next Celek’s next contract.

The coach still believes there’s still a chance that tight end Zach Ertz’s could play in Week one against the Atlanta Falcons.  I don’t agree with him.

When asked about the play of the Eagles defense, Kelly said he wants to see the defense improve from a penalty standpoint.  The defense struggled to get off the field because o the penalties they committed on Saturday.  Kelly didn’t like the fact that the second-string defense gave up some long drives to the Packers’ backups.

Chip Kelly says Bennie Logan has been difficult to block.  He has been a disruptive force in the stopping the other team’s run game. Logan has been creating a lot of havoc.   Bennie is playing as well as anybody on our defensive line right now.  In my opinion, Fletcher Cox and Cedrick Thornton have been all playing very well.

There are question marks in the Eagles secondary at the nickel corner position and at the backup safeties.  Kelly says the nickel corner position is up in the air.  They want to make a decision about that position before the first game in Atlanta.  According to Chip, the injury to Jerome Couplin has hurt them when it comes to depth at the safety position.   Kelly said the third and fourth safeties are a question mark.

Coach Kelly said the toughest part of making the roster cuts is having to tell the players that they are no longer part of the team.

Jason Peters is the big cog in the system that makes everything work. ( most important player on the roster and irreplaceable )
Big play Bennie Logan has become NFL elite, he owns the A-gap.
Saw Nate Allen intercept Carson Palmer twice last night. Arizona has AQ Shippley starting at Center ( he couldn’t even beat out David Molk here) That is a huge weakness right in front of Carson Palmer.

The gray lining to the Eagles’ encouraging preseason has been the unimpressive pass defense. We have very little in the way of sacks and QBs have put up solid numbers against the first team defense. Except Flacco. We have no NB. Somewhere Boykin is laughing at us. We also have no recourse when Thurmond gets hurt which history indicates is almost certain. I do not see where people see our secondary as being significantly improved. And the pass rush is an issue. We are a pass rush stud away from SB contention. We just don’t have that guy that teams worry about. Cox and the D line in general are disappointing in that area. Barwin is just a guy and Graham and Curry are good but not awesome or anything. Our 49 sacks last year made it look like we are a good pass rushing team. We aren’t. We are average. We had four zero sack games and one sack for minus two yards against Green Bay. Buffalo who beat us by just five sacks had only one zero sack game. We piled up numbers against Giants and Panthers in two games. An elite QB will be the end of the line in the playoffs unless Bradford can play the way he played on Saturday and we can win a shoot out.
Also, I am not convinced I am going to see anyhting like the 1980’s Chargers or 1990’s 49ers or recent Broncos and Colts teams. This will not be an offensive machine. They get into too many third down situations. Machine like offenses do not have to convert a lot of third downs. Watch and see when we play the Jets and Bills and can’t run the ball and become one dimensional. We will struggle to put up twenty points on offense in those games. So obviously we aren’t getting past Seattle any time soon in a playoff game.
We seem to be headed in the right direction. RZ scoring should be improved and that will lead to more points. The run defense could be as good as any when we get our ILBs healthy. Playing keep away will not be an option for opposing offenses. If we stay reasonably healthy, avoid a lot of penalties, sacks and turnovers; and take the ball away from the other team better than we did last year, we should be able to win the NFC East. But I would still put us third in the conference just a hair ahead of Dallas and clearly behind GB and Seattle. I think we could beat any AFC team in the SB except the Colts. The problem is I don’t see us being able to beat GB or Seattle in an NFCC game. Maybe we can be like the 2008 Phillies and avoid having to beat a great team.

I’m sorry if the deadskins release rg3 the eagles have to think real hard about picking him up cause he’s better than tebow and Barkley right now abd half way thru the season under chip he will be better than sanchez

gloomy your grasp of reality is at an all-time low- RG ME is everything chip hates in a qb- not decisive, turnover prone and not accurate.

RG3 would be an excellent pickup! Better than Tebow and Barkley combined and gives us more hope if the wheels fall off due to injury…he can compete for a backup roll…

Best case scenario. Eagles earn a bye. Play Atl in the first and Dallas in their third straight road game in NFCC. Then we get Pitt in the SB instead of Indy.

Defense is the biggest question…actually Davis is the biggest question….It’s tough to take anything from the corner DB position thus far. Mainly because of how the damn DC is calling the games. So much soft coverage. Players may have improved gotten stronger, faster, due to familiarity with teammates, system…possibly even improved on techniques, but due to this DC I’m only seeing mediocrity in the secondary for this season. Still not seeing enough sacks. Pressure is fine, no doubt, but you capitalize with a sack. A QB can get pressured but still complete a pass. If the offense struggles, I’m just not convinced the defense will be able to hold, because of the defensive play caller.

Agreed. Afraid that they won’t be able to get off the field per the last couple of year.

*** Buffalo Bills News***
It’s appearing more likely that RB L McCoy will not be ready to Start the Season for the Buffalo Bills as his Hamstring Pull/Tear has been slower to recover than originally Planned and that he is not in real good Football shape once his Hamstring fully heals per Sources of the Bills..
They probably should have kept RB fred Jackson who they just Cut earlier this week and may have to open up the Season with Bryce Brown & Draft Pick Karlos Williams who both have been slowed by injuries this Summer..
