Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week today after his tremendous game against the New England Patriots. I like the aggressiveness that Jenkins played with in the Patriots game. Defensive football is supposed to be played violently and Jenkins epitomized that on Sunday, when he forced the outside runs from his safety position.
These hits on the Patriots backs let New England know that this was a going to be a game. This is a way a leader speaks to his teammates.
Jenkins was quick with his reads, then he came up and pounded the New England running backs before they could get started. The play which set up his momentus interception return was a violent tackle in the Patriots backfield by Jenkins, which forced Brady to have to throw the football on the goalline.
Who will ever forget his goalline interception of Tom Brady and the 100-yard touchdown return that followed. It was one of the huge plays in the game that turned what was expected to be a sure loss into a season-saving victory.
Jenkins has had a very good year except in the interception department. If he had pulled down a few of the numerous interception opportunities he’s had, he would a Pro Bowler this year and still may be.
Good plays takes care of controversy. Jenkins was criticized for publicly saying negative things about the way Chip Kelly runs the football team. There was nothing but great things being said about Jenkins after his outstanding performance against the Pats.
Jenkins was very active and had his best game in a month versus the Pats for the previous 3 Weeks to be quite honest, Jenkins looked like he lost his explosion and was not as physical with his tackling and got ran over quite a bit in that Dolphins, Bucs and Lions Game as most of the Defense did..
But overall Jenkins has had a very solid Season, I would not say Pro-Bowl Caliber, but very good…
I still would like to see the Eagles ILB’s make more Tackles than leaving the Tackles up to Jenkins and Thurmond…
When Hicks was Playing, Hicks was making the brunt of the tackles,
Not with Hicks Out, the leading Tacklers become the Eagles Safety’s which is not good and what I think hurt this Defense the most for when the Safeties are constantly having to make Tackles, then they suffer in Pass-Coverage’s
I keep hearing on how good LB Michael Kendricks is and I still don’t see anything special at all about his play outside of blitzing the Backfield..
against the Run, he Stinks and against the Pass, he’s flat out horrible
Alonso after a fast start, looks lost, probably has stopped his Juice for his looks thin and can’t hold his on ground at the point of attack.. He’s not the Player he was 2-3 Years Ago and his Body will not be able to hold up so he is not a long-term solution for the Eagles….
I rather see Goode or even the Released Acho in there playing ILB than Kendricks or Ryans … but that’s just me…
They will need to address ILB in the next Draft again

The Starting OLB’s Barwin & Graham don’t have enough Tackles,
ILB J Hicks has almost as many as Kendricks and more than D Ryans, K Alonso and only played in 8 Games which is in indictment on how poorly the ILB Position has been for a couple of years now..
DT B Logan is killing it with 50 Tackles for the DT which is awesome
and only behind 54 Tackles of Linval Joseph of the Vikings and Aaron Donald of the Rams..

Bills Secondary is very Physical with Safety Corey Graham with 92 Tackles and Rookie Defensive Player of the Year Candidate Ronald Darby with 60 and DCAR man thumper Safety Bacarri Rambo with 43 Tackles
Bills Leading Sack Masters are Jerry Hughes with 4 Sacks & 38 Tackles
and Mario Williams who only has 3 Sacks and 14 Tackles
the Saints made a big mistake choosing the more expensive Byrd over Jenkins.

Look at the last 2 Off-Seasons and they Added Safety Jarius Byrd, CJ Spiller and Brandon Browner who are all busts and way overpaid for what they provide..
I remember telling everyone to stay far, far away from Safety Jarius Byrd and that he was over-rated, damaged goods and probably wouldn’t even see the end of his 5-6 Year Deal…
Didn’t Howie Roseman state that the Safety position was the hardest to scout, and judge at the NFL Level several years ago? One of the most frustrating things during the Reid tenure after Weapon X was his ability to draft and evaluate talent at the Safety position. Drafts 2010-2011 wa probably the worst back to back drafts in team History.
In comes Chip Kelly, and we have had arguably the best Safety tandem in the league this season with not one, but two pro bowlers.
Chip, has not been perfect in an imperfect game, but he has made some great, and good decions along with some questionable and very bad ones just like any other GM would do. The safety acquistions, has not been one of them.
Nobody bats a thousand, but it has been awesome watching Malcolm and Walter this season.
The Safety Position has changed quite a bit in just the last few years with the growth of these 3-4 WR Sets and the bigger Athletic TE’s that every Team seems to have these days..
Both Eagles Safeties came up as CB’s and are not the true Safeties of 5-10 Years ago.. Thurmond is a 190 LB’s at most .. Today’s Safeties have to line up all. Over the place and have the ability the play man to man in Pass coverages with these 4-5 WR sets or double TE Sets that Teams employ..
Both Jenkins & Thurmond are able to do so due to their CB background skills and quickness.. Could you imagine Kurt Coleman or Nate Allen lining up 1 on 1 over today’s Receivers ..
The Days of a true Strong Safety who is primarily a thumper but weak in pass coverage gets exposed by the good Teams/QB’s and Receivers..

Olberholtzer is a Delaware boy..went to my alma matter and has a big arm. The young OF they got has some power and Valesquez I guess is the center piece of the trade. Phil’s are going with lots of arms and defense… There OF next year won’t hit 20 HR but they will cover some ground

The phils will mirror the royals, bucs, astros for a couple of years and then with their deep pockets fill a void- They are all in for pitching and defense and youth. they must have close to 10 young SP that are on the cusp of the big leagues. They lack power right now especially in the OF but the OF defense should be fantastic… Rupp is a good defensive catcher– average age on opening day roster will be under 25 is my guess…
I am ready for a younger team now. Ready to take my lumps to build up the team and then add a small amount of FAs to augment.
That Mets rotation is going to be tough to deal with for years. I know that I have a lot more reasons to go to the ballpark next year. Ballparks, I should say because I would include Reading and Lehigh Valley.
if the young arms do ok and they get 50-60 HR from the IF corners they should be fun…lots of running etc… i read something where they are trying to change their IF grass to make it slower allowing for more IF hits????

I imagine the Phils may look to Trade a Darrin Ruf or Cody Asche if their is interest and the right deal comes along… if they can turn 2-3 Young Players into 6-7-8 Young Players, than that’s what they’ll do as they did with Reliever Giles being a perfect example using Young Talent to acquire more young Talent….
From this time last year with the trading of rollins they have totally transformed. as someone mentioned it may be interesting to go to games again…not necessarily to see a W but to see the young guys play… should be fun.
When you have Leadership and genuine experienced Baseball People making the Decisions, like Lee McPhail and the group he’s put together, then maybe roughing it for a year or 2 is part of the process of rebuilding the Phils into a Winner again… McPhail’s Track Record since the 90’s with the Minnesota Twins, then the Cubs and then the Orioles was always about having a solid Farm System built on Pitching, Defense and playing Fundamentally-Sound Baseball which has been lacking for a while in Philly
Given the fact that the Braves, Marlins are rebuilding just like the Phils are and are slightly ahead right now, and the Washington Nationals are kind of at a cross-roads with a lot of aging Players with big $$$ so who knows what direction they go.. The Phils in 2-3 Years Time should really be able to compete with the Mets .. The NL is loaded right now with the Cardinals, Cubs,Pirates, Dodgers,SF Giants & Mets as all Solid Teams and Arizona looks like they mean business and have gone out and improved themselves

Valesquez has a pretty live arm. Was killing it in AA last year before they brought him up. I’m sure Klentak tried hard to get McCullers but the Astros but he is much further along than Velasquez.

Exactly! Talk is cheap…its the play on the field that matters..the Eagles defense will need excellent penetration against Buffalo’s Offensive line to slow Shady down…and Jenkins will have to play at a high level again this week.
The key to containing McCoy is not really penetration, it’s more about lane discipline and having that backside containment play true and honest and stay at home asShady will come back your way..
That’s OLB’s Brandon Graham and Connor Barwin who need to stay at home and be ready when Shady cuts back and reverses his field which is where most of his big runs come..
Is it me or does it seem this team really doesn’t respect Chip Kelly. One thing I can’t wrap my head around is why multiple refer to Chip Kelly as Chip instead of coach. I don’t remember Westbrook or McNabb calling Andy Reid “Andy”. It was usually Coach Reid or Coach Andy. I may be wrong. I just find it odd

His lack of Work Ethic, Maturity & Desire have all be an issue since coming out of Texas A&M.. Stay Away .. Watch the Cowboys Sign Him..
