Thoughts On Pederson News Conference

sametiesNew Eagles’ head coach Doug Pederson was introduced to the media on Tuesday afternoon.

This conference had a lot of interesting wrinkles and revelations, from Jeffrey Lurie commenting on the hiring process, to the confirmation of Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator, to the fates of Jason Peters and Brent Celek, to the reveal that the Eagles will be searching for another personnel executive, this conference had a lot to break down.

Here’s some of my biggest takeways from the day.

Lurie Calls Coaching Search “Exhausting”, Reveals Search For Personnel Executive

The biggest laughable moment came in early in the news conference.

Jeffrey Lurie tried to tell anyone that would listen that Pederson was the team’s first choice for head coach. The Eagles began with a playing field of 25, and through all kinds of exhausting evaluations, the end of the rainbow led straight to Doug Pederson, and no one else.

Sure, whatever you say, Jeff.

Later in the conference, Lurie revealed that the team would be seeking an addition personnel executive to add to their front office.

This is good news for those who were concerned about Howie Roseman’s return to power. The team will in-fact add an outside voice that will bring a fresh set of eyes and ideas to the fold.

On Pederson Himself

I really liked a lot of what Pederson had to say. I’ve been warming more and more to the idea of him as head coach, and for the most part I thought he made a decent first impression.

The only moment in the conference that gave me pause was when Pederson was questioned about how he handled calling the Patriots game in the second half.

Pederson proudly revealed that he had been calling plays in the second half of Kansas City’s games, including last weekend’s game against the Patriots. During this game, the Chiefs brutally mismanaged the clock at the end of the game, taking too long to score and leaving themselves without a real opportunity to get the ball back.

And Pederson’s explanation for that gaffe?

“We didn’t want to give the ball back to Tom Brady.”

What? So Pederson’s strategy in that moment was to run as much time as possible off of the clock with his team down multiple scores before scoring and attempting to get the ball back? If you can’t follow that logic, you aren’t alone.

Pederson seemed a little uncomfortable in that moment, and to be fair I think what he was getting at was that the Chiefs knew they absolutely had to score in that situation, so they were going about things in a way they felt would assure them a touchdown on that drive, but his explanation was garbage.

Jim Schwartz Confirmed As Defensive Coordinator

During the conference, Pederson confirmed that former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz would be joining the Eagles as their new defensive coordinator.

I think this is a great bit of news for the Eagles’ defense, and Schwartz may instantly be the best guy they’ve had in the position ever since the great Jim Johnson passed away.

Schwartz last coached in Buffalo as defensive coordinator in 2014, and the Bills finished fourth in the league in total defense, led the league in sacks, and were ranked third against the pass. Those are some tremendous numbers that a clown like Billy Davis can only dream about.

Schwartz took last year off after Rex Ryan (who was stepping in as new head coach in Buffalo) wanted to put his own people in place.

Its very likely now that the Birds will indeed return to a 4-3 scheme, which will suit this team’s personnel much better.

Vinny Curry has a chance to thrive in a defense like this. Fletcher Cox returns to his natural position. Stiffs like Taylor Hart will be shown the door. Who knows, maybe he can even get something out of Marcus Smith.

I’m also thrilled that the Eagles didn’t end up with Steve Spagnulo. The Birds were reportedly interested, but the Giants denied them permission to interview their former linebackers coach. Spagnulo has really only had two good years as a defensive coordinator, and his units haven’t been anything special since 2008. In fact, he’s been ranked just as poorly as Billy Davis in recent years.

Eagles To Keep Jason Peters, Brent Celek?

Following the end of the 2015 season, the future of Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive tackle Jason Peters and tight end Brent Celek were very much in doubt.

Both carry a high cap number for next season,  Peters has seen his play level off and decline over the last two seasons, and this past year it was a struggle for him just to stay on the field, with the veteran coming out of nearly every game at one point or another with various injuries. While some of those in-game departures may have been related to his distaste for former head coach Chip Kelly, its clear that he’s trending towards the downside of his career.

However, Pederson went and singled out both players as guys that he’s looking forward to working with, implying that both players will return next season.

The Eagles are still in need of salary cap relief, and may still attempt to restructure their contracts, but their odds of returning are much more likely than they were before.

How many other teams wanted Doug Pederson as their head coach?

Zero …. What’s your point?
Take a look at the coaching vacancy this year… Bucs fired a guy to keep their OC, Titans kept a guy that wasn’t successful, San Fran went with a guy that just destroyed a stable franchise, Giants stayed in house, the Browns hired a guy with raider and Bengal stink….
Is Pederson good ? Damned if either one of us know

Jimmy Hendrix is dead and with 20 prospects and 2000 pages which is bullshit
they narrowed it down to six 2 of which were in the Eagles cafeteria. He fits because he is a yes man and will work under “Howie” the effeminate GM. I personally don’t care about a coaches personality. Get somebody who wins. He played QB for Eagles and stunk. He was the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs
and they looked like the Eagles in their supe rbowl against the Patriots eons ago and still doing the same dumb things with time outs clock management etc.

Having the ability to get along with people you work for/with.

One thing is clear from the 49er and eagles press conferences chip and Howie were impossible together….

Time will tell. I worked for years for Jewish bosses. They loved yes men. They
crucified any one who made waves and at times they ate their own. They loved to manipulate and lie about the truth to make themselves look good. Chip, who I don’t care for said (at 49ers press conf) that he doesn’t need control of the draft and that he was glad to be working with football people. That was a direct hit on Howie whom I don’t feel is a quality talent evaluator.

I just watched the entire Interview and thought Pederson did a good job of handling himself with the media and appears to be a Coach who is going to be thorough, consistent, approachable and prepared…
I like the Fact that he Hired Jim Schwartz as his DC for this should bode well
For a much more aggressive and attacking Defense that the Eagles haven’t had in Years… Players like F Cox, V Curry, B Graham, B Logan & LB’s Kendricks & Hicks should really excell in Schwartz up the field schemes and style of play

A couple of “news-worthy” statements made by Pedserson & Lurie
Pederson acknowledge only 2 Coach’s thus far ( Fipp & Stoutland ) are being
retained
Lurie acknowledged that a New Search for a Player Personnel will begin this week and that Accountability to all Employees of the Organization will be a priority in 2016

All in all, a very good start to a new era to Eagles Football which is exciting to see..

Pman, how you figure they use Connor Barwin? Sam or DE or both?
Curry, Logan, Cox and Graham 4-3 DL with Kendrick Weakside, Hick Inside, and Barwin Strongside then Barwin moves to pass rusher in nickle?
Logan leaves field in Nickle and Curry moves form DE to DT with Barwin going to DE from Sam?

paulman

January 19, 2016 9:29 pm

Yes Eagles0SB on Barwin..
I see him as the SAM LBin their Base 4-3 Defense and then move to a Pass-Rushing DE some times to spell Graham/Curry..
A wildcard for Schwartz is where does Kiko Alonso fit..
Schwartz Coached the Bills Defense in 2014 when Alonso was there, now Alonso got hurt and missed all of the regular 2014 Season but Schwartz & Alonso should be familiar with each other.. Does Kiko play the SAM LB On obvious passing situations and allow Barwin to Play DE ?
Or dies he use Alonso as a Clay Matthews Type and move hi all around the formations to blitz and get into the backfield.. One thing is for certain, Alonso was never the same after that early season concussion, he lost his speed, explosiveness and overall confidence when he returned so he will have to step up his game to get onto the field.. 2016 is a Contract year for Kiko so he has all the motivation to play the best he can while still on a Cheapo Rookie Dealn
If Schwartz does not think he’s part of the Future then maybe Kiko gets Traded for a 3rd/4th Round Pick similar to what they did with Boykin last Summer..

Maybe Chip will want to trade for Kiko and Taylor Hart…I am being facetious! But if I was the personnel guy I would see if Chip wants them.

No mention or confirmation of Frank Reich either as OC
Most Experienced OC’s are likely to want to Call Plays so Reich may not be interested .. Pederson said he was still interviewing, talking to Coachs for his Staff …

I don;t know why everyone in media always announces they think everything Lurie says is BS.

I liked when Pederson talked about Eagles losing for a long time and this was a rebuild.

I did not like when he began talking about “yes we can win the division” because its statements like those that can get you killed in Philly quickly if it doesn’t happen.

I thought it was absurd when a couple of reporters were asking, “you were not the first choice (like they know) how do you feel about that?”

koolbreeze

January 19, 2016 9:11 pm

Well Vinniedafool…Lurie is full of BS…but I’m sure you also love Pederson especially when he said:

“I think Sam’s a quality quarterback, I think he’s a top-notch quarterback,”

“Look at what he did the last half of the season. The numbers he was able to put up — he’s a quarterback that would fit perfectly into a system I’m going to bring.

Since Pederson says that…what possible excuse could the Eagle have for not bring back a “top-notch Quarterback” that fits in his system?

Dont sound like they will be tearing the team apart and trying to find a new QB!

If Pederson’s talking about a ‘rebuild’ it’s obvious that he is talking about an off-season rebuild that will enable us to compete this year and win the division…especially given what he has said about Bradford!

So lets see how much of a chance you are now really willing to give the new Head Coach, Vinniedafoolass! Will you do your usual flip-flop routine that has gotten so old on here or stick to what you were claiming before now that it seems that the Eagles are not going to your “tear-everything-down-to- rebuild” mode!

Lmao…you are always on the short end Vinniedafool!!

Or will you continue your shifting, ducking, dodging, and flip-flopping ways Vinniedafool!

I think Doug was noncommittal on personnel as they are waiting for their new hire to help make those decisions as well as give him time to meet people and watch film on the offense while Schwarz looks at the defense and then that make decisions.

Why not just keep pat shurmur as offensive cordinator???
If Sam is a top notch qb the way pederson said, keep a coach around Sam will be comfortable with. It will only help the young QB, and persuade him to stay even more.

Gotta move on from Bradford. Chip killed a salary Cap in 1 year after the Eagles had mastered it for 20 years. With Demarco, Graham and Kendricks and no 2nd round pick with the ridiculous contracts it has forced the Eagles to look at a QB in the 1st round or sign a Chase Daniels type, Every time I see Chip on TV I’m furious at what he did to our team. He moved all our pro-bowlers, killed our cap, took draft picks and left. I just want to punch him in his fucking face. One thing Howie can do and I believe he will do is fix the cap. He is a master at it. It may take 2-3 years but I trust him with the cap.

Eagles will move back in the draft to recoup their 2nd round pick. Unless someone falls to them that is head and shoulders better than everyone else on the board the Eagles will move back into the 20s to pick up a 2nd round pick. That’s what I would do. Hell I may move back to the early 2nd round if I could get a team in the top of the 1st round to give up say there 2nd, 4th and next years number 1.

That’s what I would do too drag, unless QB Paxton Lynch falls to #13
I think the Texans at #22 could be a good Trading Partner
Eagles Trade #13th for Texans #22 & #54th of the 2nd Round,
then the Eagles would have the 22,54,77 & 80 Selections in the Top 3 Rounds
(Get 2 OL, 1 DL & 1 WR or DB)

That may happen too Paul. That kid from North Dakota State is moving up mock draft boards, and Lynch would be in play for the Eagles.

I wouldn’t mind Sam Bradford, but the price tag for his skill set is too high for me. So I would just go with Sanchez, and draft a QB, or 2 – ala the Redskins – and save that money to strengthen the other needs of the team.

I would draft Lynch, but I would also draft Jacoby Brissett in the 3rd, or 4th as well.

BTW, Watson , the QB from Clemson, isn’t a NFL QB – I don’t know why his name keeps coming up as an option at QB for us – he isn’t the answer….

The kid from North Dakotah State is Carson Wentz. I have watched a couple of his games, I prefer him over Paxton Lynch as he is more accurate and makes more plays. His level of competition was not as good, but neither was Ben Rothliesburger’s, If he is there at 13, I seriously consider taking him. I also like DE Kevin Dodd from Clemson. Would love to get Ronnie Stanley, Laquan Treadwell or Jalen Ramsey, but they will most likely be gone by 13.

I think the Eagles will Offer Bradford a 2 Year – $35 Million Deal with possibly an Option for Year 3 to cover the Team.. Bradford is looking for a more longer Term Deal of 4 Years or so, which I just don’t see the Eagles, with a new Coaching Staff in Place and who are not married to Bradford to begin with offering anymore than 2 Years
Of Course Pederson is going to speak highly of Bradford at yesterday’s PC,
What else do you expect a New HC to say, “I don’t like Bradford’s Game for my Offense and Prefer a more Mobile Player back there, but if we can’t find one, we’ll come back to Sam” ?

Eagles Hire Joun Difilippo as QB Coach
DeFilippo was the Cleveland Browns OC last year
He also was a QB Coach with the Jets when Mark Sanchez was un NY
Frank Reich expected to accept the OC Position by tomorrow as Pederson’s Staff takes shape

The more I think about it the HELL with this years draft. Go Sixxers on them with a gamble. Its imperative to get two 1st round picks next year for a franchise QB. Maybe the ND or Clemson QB. Get rid of your 1st round pick to someone try to get a 2nd round pick and a # 1 next year. The team will win 4-6 games be in the top 6 next year with 2 number ones to move up for a stud QB. This year you focus your draft on best available olineman in round 2, 3 and 4. The odds of the worst teams already having a QB ala Jville, Tenn etc will deal with you next year and gladly take a package. Its a gamble but one that will work.

Howie Roseman is getting paid superstar starter General Manager money to be a 25%-33% collaborating voice compared to his NFL front office peers who have 100% power at a third the salary as him. Will the new player personnel hire be getting the same salary as Howie for the same 25%-33% collaborating power?

Rumor has it that Demarco Murray wants to be released by the Eagles so he can rejoin the Cowgirls. lol, see this is why I hate when the Eagles sign players who come from Dallas. It’s a curse
