As Wentz Shines, Rams And Browns Look Foolish
Carson Wentz enjoyed a tremendous debut for the Eagles on Opening Day, the two teams that passed on opportunities to draft Wentz looked remarkably foolish for turning their noses up at Wentz.
I’m not sure which team looks more foolish.
There’s the Rams, who gave up a larger package than the Eagles to move up to the first overall pick in the draft to select Jared Goff, who many expected to be starting in Week 1. Instead, Goff is on the bench with no timetable to enter the starting lineup while Case Keenum, who probably belongs in the CFL, serves as the starter.
Then there’s the Browns, who have drafted four quarterbacks in the first-round since they came back to the league in 1999, and still don’t have an answer at the position. They not only passed up the chance to take Wentz, but openly insulted him in the week leading up to the game, decreeing that they didn’t see him as a top-20 quarterback. Oops.
Wentz’s success with the Eagles could ultimately have great consequences for the organizations that didn’t take him.
Josh Norman Represents Everything Wrong With “Shutdown” Corners
On Monday night, the Washington Redskins went down in flames in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
During the game, star wide receiver Antonio Brown was allowed to run wild, and made mincemeat out of Breshaud Breeland. Before the game, the matchup was supposedly billed as a great battle between Brown and star corner Josh Norman.
However, Norman wasn’t interested in the challenge.
Norman has become the latest elite cornerback to declare that he’s only going to play on one side of the field. And the laughable strategy resulted in the Steelers simply keeping Brown on the opposite side, giving him a matchup that he exploited all night long on his way to a 126-yard, two touchdown effort.
I can’t stand corners like Norman that insist they’ll only play one side, and won’t shadow the other team’s top receiver. To me, that attitude is more diva-like behavior than anything a wide receiver has ever done. Corners that only play one side of the field essentially are admitting that they aren’t good enough to take on elite receivers; it’s the ultimate cop-out in my eyes.
If I were Breeland, I would resent Norman as a teammate. While Breeland was getting roasted by Brown, Norman got the pitifully easier challenge of taking on the likes of no-name wideouts like Sammie Coates.
Why pay a corner that kind of money if you can’t count on him to at least make the effort take away the other team’s top aerial threat?
Quick Thoughts
- Chip Kelly got a cute little win on Monday night against an absolutely woeful, pitiful organization in the Rams. I still fully expect the 49ers to be one of the worst teams in the league, but I underestimated just how terrible a job Jeff Fisher has done with that team.
- Not that impressed with Dak Presscot yet. He had trouble throwing the ball down the field, and considering the wealth of talent he has to work with on his offense? I don’t think the Cowboys are still going to be his team when Tony Romo returns from his back injury.
- Hate Bill Belichick all you want, but give him credit, he’s a hell of a coach. To go in to Arizona down not only Tom Brady, but Rob Gronkowski as well, and to have your best pass rusher now playing for the other team and you still come away with a win? That’s remarkable.
- The Minnesota Vikings game was the most frustrating outcome of Week 1. The stage was set for the Titans to win that game, but Marcus Mariota played poorly and the Vikings got themselves a win through defensive turnovers.
- As an aside, I can’t tell you how happy I am to be building around Carson Wentz instead of Mariota. I’ve always thought Mariota was a system-quarterback that wasn’t going to be great at the NFL level, and he’s only reinforced that belief.
- Meanwhile, the guy taken in front of Mariota, Jameis Winston, is on his way to becoming an absolute stud.
- I think Mike McCoy out in San Diego could end up being the first coach fired this season. Blowing that lead to Kansas City is a horrible tone to set for the year, and things could only get worse now that Keenan Allen has been lost for the season again.
Wow. Jeff Fisher’s Rams looked like the most unprepared team to play in opening week. Turrible coaching job. (Right Charles?)
I hate rooting for the Giants but the only better ending to that game would have been a tie.
-Dallas Sucks!-
After one week I feel like this eagle team is better than thought and in the mix to be a middle of the league team trending up.
Lots of bad teams out there.
Fly Eagles Fly
Jeff Fisher is complete joke and disgrace of a head coach. The fact that he hasn’t been able to field a better receiver duo than kenny britt and tavon austin over the last three years is a complete embarrassment…
Isn’t this exciting. I really feel energized.
Freekin’ Monday night coming up with a rook who’s earning nat’l attention. A coach that seems…just…grounded. And who keeps stating he’s comitted to running the ball.
A GM who seems to have no fear and is willing to put his neck out there and take a shot.
Not sure hhow this is all going to play out, but its fun to be a Birds fan again, that’s for sure.
Some things I still want to see….the pash rush. Only thing I was a little concerned about last week. Thought they’d be able to generate more than they did.
This Lane Johnson looming suspension business is ridiculous. There’s got to be something going on behind the scenes for this to be dragging out the way it is.
A couple more weeks and he might be able to appeal and tie it up until next year.
I still don’t see how R Matthews makes it through the year, o I’d like to see Smallwood get worked in there a little bit over the next few weeks to see what we’ve got there.
The Ertz injury might linger, and I am not sure how Agholor and Burton will be able to pick up the slack.
What was the deal with Sproles?
Why can’t the WRs catch (though soooo funny to see how no one is brining that up as an “excuse” anymore.) And I’m not bringing it up as an excuse….I just can envision how much better the Birds would be if they stopped dropping 8 yard crossing patterns.
excited indeed vin. long gone are the hopeless seasons that tsjohnson and koolbreeze begged for and loved… we have that type of year again with an unknown similar to when foles took over only now its with a top flight athlete, a high pick, a guy that has every tool and intangible you look for… we watched foles with hope and rooted hard and watched him develop, he certainly had his warts but that year was fun. now we locked into that for 5 years of hopefully continued improvement, development, progress and ultimately hopefully we shape a team capable of competing.
for me and what i want for this team we couldnt have asked for anything more
This is what we wanted 3 Years ago. New coach young QB and his tight end teddy bear. Instead we got chip and were told his piss was beer.
tsjohnson & koolbreeze sure are busy this week
Ha…The “WIN NOW!!!” with Vick/Bradford/(insert another team’s failed first-round qb pick of your choice here) crew were always good for some of the most painfully shortsighted/laughable takes.
As soon as Carson hits a bump in the road we will hear from Koolbreeze and TSJohnson.
Notice I’m calling him Carson (his first name) because I think he will be around Philadelphia for a long time. He will be like “Ben” or “Tom” or “Peyton”….
I’m very excited about Carson Wentz. I don’t have another 40 years to wait for a championship. Carson Wentz gives a hope for the future….. I just hope he stays healthy!
the same crowd who despised winning with foles.
If it was up to that crew, the Eagles would have gone out and signed Robert Griffin in the offseason, let him and Bradford battle it out for the starting job and then let the Browns stay at two and take Wentz…
Worse Dallas would have Carson (I’m down for the first name thing) and we would definitely be in bad moods for a decade.
Dak Prescott aka Dink and Dunk Dak did not live up to the preseason hype, just as I thought. I said wait until the regular season begins when defenses stop playing vanilla. Dak dinked and dunked his way up and down the field Sunday going 25-45, 227 yards, 56.1 completion %age. That’s not going to get it done 0 TD’s 0 Ints. 5.6 YPA 69.4 Rating when you have that O line, Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, an old but good Jason Witten…Zeke looked like crap so I can’t name him.
Facing the blitz Dak went 3-8 for 22 yards. When pressured he does not respond well as indicated by his performance. During the preseason he was allowed to sit back and play pitch and catch against disinterested defenses and people could not stop talking about him. The NFL network even said that he’s the clear cut replacement for Romo.
Against the Giants I did not see Dak make a throw in a tight window, his passes went to open guys with a nice cushion around them. Dak’s accuracy was also off.
All of the preseason Dak Prescott hype…
Some guys on GCOBB was so enamored by Prescott’s MVP HOF preseason they questioned and slammed the Eagles for taking Wentz instead of going with Prescott in a later round….lmao…Dink and Dunk Dak with a very Sam Bradfor-ish performance..no thank you.
yea where the dick riding for dak crew?

I gave Carson Wentz a C+…good plays, good poise…good mobility but with some really bad plays, high throws that gets receivers killed, bad turnover in the endzone.
But the kid down in Dallas- Dak Prescott-looked a whole lot better!
I gave that kid an A+ in his debut!
He looked poised, sound in the pocket…dropping dimes…beautiful passes..he showed mobility, made good reads, got rid of the ball
He made a back shoulder throw to a well-covered Dez Bryant that many vet QB’s dont make.
He stepped right in and went 6-7 with accurate on the money passes…no rookie jitters or over-excitement..
The “Let Wentz sit” crew for some reason have developed a whole lot of confidence in Pederson and his Coaching Staff’s ability to develop Quarterbacks. If these coaches are so good why does the fourth round kid down in Dallas looked better than our franchise QB that we gave up picks to move up and get with the second pick?
Prescott looked better than Goff and Wentz!
I know…its still very early…but it sure makes you wonder!!!
LMAO…Dink and Dunk Dak..Preseason MVP HOF PLAYER

Wentz has talent…never said that he didn’t have “talent”
A lot of QB’s have talent…including that kid down in Dallas that they got in the 4th round without giving up draft picks to move up!
There have been plenty of talented QB’s who have been busts!
The issue is NOT is Dak Prescott better or more talented than Carson Wentz…he may or may not be a better QB…but which of the QB’s looked more ready to play in the NFL…its very clear that Dak Prescott looked as if he had been better coached, better prepared to play in the NFL!!
No question about that at all..did Carson Wentz do some good things…Sure!…but he also looked like a guy who is not ready for prime time at all!!
How that talent is supposed to be developed by sitting on the bench watching.
The Kid only has 650 throws in his career in college…he didn’t play enough
Is he smart, big, strong, mobile, with a good arm-“talented”…yeah…and so was Tim Couch, Akili Smith, David Carr and plenty of other QB’s that have not made it in the league.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
if Dak Prescott doesn’t throw the Football to Dez Bryant this weekend all hell is going to break out down there after the game.
Dez Bryant has 1 catch for 8 yard so far.
There is now a path out of QB hell– Sam is the poster child for QB hell, along with an aging mike vick– This is fresh with a serious upside… Go to the light Carson!
im so curious to see what happens in minny. man everyone thinks theyre really good and i just dont see it. their d is good but not sure how far that can go. i need sam to be sam and go 7-9 at best theres some serious talent at rb i want in the 2017 draft
Haha Nitwits Hotair and TS “shrugs” Johnson. I don;t mind anyone having an opinion contrary to mine. It makes good debate. Those that Crow when they are right and hide when they are wrong have no credibility. Time and time again I have seen that happen with a few posters around here. Them being correct was more important then the birds winning. Like I picture them sitting at hope hoping for the birds to fall so they can come on here and crow. Especially Hotair. I swear he championed Bradford because he wanted us all to suffer because Vick was gone. The Cult of Vick still survives to this day. I hated MV as a player but wanted to win and every week i rooted the idiot on. These are the same people who say “REAL FANS” all the time.
Seeing the chiefs waived their 3rd rd pick…Keivare Russell..watched him at notre dame…thought he was a decent player. Wouldnt mind kicking tires on him.
Saints Released disappointing RB CJ Spiller who has been ineffective and often injured during his NFL Carrer with both Buffalo & New Orleans
I think he had 1 good productive season out the 5-6 Years he’s been in the NFL
It was reported that Russell was 6th on the Chiefs CB Depth Chart and was beat out for Playing Time by th Round Pick DJ White of Ga Tech
The Chiefs added a LB who they cut earlier to provide more Depth along their LB Corp’s..
Thanks for the info Paulman…i wouldnt mind bringing him in. He was good at notre dame. Fast and can tackle. Would love to know what happened. Cause ive never seen this before…letting a 3rd rd pick in the same yr draft go.
I remember the Eagles cut their second round DT draft pick from UCLA before final roster cuts in his draft year. At least Keivare Russell made game one. I just don’t remember his name.
Eagles signed Chiefs draft pick QB Aaron Murray to practice squad. HC Pederson bringing in stiffs.
um who would you expect for a 3rd string QB this time of year…obviously he thinks he’s better than the guy with three names…
funny 0 you whined about too much QB depth now you whine about not enough.
His name was Bruce Walker from UCLA, and it was 22 years ago. He was drafted by Rich Kotite….
The Cincinnati Bengals Picked up CB KeiVarae Russell off of Waivers and Released CB Trey Hopkins on Waivers..
Damn
**NFL News****
Buffalo Bills to Fire Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman…
Since the Beginning of the 2015 Season
-Bills Offense is Ranked 8th Overall
-Bills Defense is Ranked 25th Overall
Go Figure…The Ryan Brothers are trying to save their Asses but I expect the entire Coaching Staff to be Replaced after the 2016 Season
OC Greg Roman was the NFL’s Highest Paid OC …
Rex Ryan is a Franchise Killer and just not a Good HC
His Brother Rob Ryan destroyed the Saints Defense and is now Destroying
the Bills Defense …
Denny,. at this point both teams look and maybe are foolish, however it would prudent for the Eagles, fans ,mostly the hard core ones such as myself to cool their jets just a little , until we get a larger sample size,However you cant deal with a desperate man. He listens with ears that do not hear. Here is hoping Mr W, is the real deal. stays healthy and the new coaching continues to grow along with Carson, Otherwize this love could get real ugly real quickly.
Congratulations to Carson Wentz for being named NFL Rookie of the week.
Man looking at our schedule after Chicago it’s gonna be hard because even Detroit will be competitive
