Notes From The Phillies’ 4-1 Loss To Miami

The Philadelphia Phillies lost their second straight game on Monday night, falling to the Marlins 4-1. Their record drops to 17-32.

On The Mound

  • Jeremy Hellickson got the start and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings.
  • Hellickson gave up two runs in the third, and was touched up for two more on a home run in the sixth.
  • Hellickson’s record drops to 5-3, his ERA stands at 4.45.
  • Joely Rodriguez pitched a scoreless seventh.
  • Mark Leiter mopped up with a scoreless eighth.

At The Plate

  • The offense was held to one run on four hits.
  • Aaron Altherr drove in the team’s only run in the sixth inning.
  • Altherr finished 1-3 with a walk, and played in center field.
  • Cesar Hernandez went 1-4 with a double and struck out three times.
  • Howie Kendrick made his long-awaited return to the lineup, and went 1-4 batting out of the two-hole.
  • Tommy Joseph went 0-3 with a walk.
  • Michael Saunders turned in an 0-4.
  • Cameron Rupp also went 0-4.
  • Maikel Franco went 0-3, dropping his average to .206.
  • Freddy Galvis went 0-3 out of the eight hole.

Final Thoughts

Another lousy offensive showing. The Phils couldn’t even put up a fight against the team that is currently vying with them for the worst record in the major leagues.

Yes, that’s how bad things have gotten.

The Phillies could only manage one run and four hits against a team that barely has a better record than they do.

Tonight, the heart of the order from Tommy Joseph through eight-hole hitter Freddy Galvis went a combined 0-17. That’s an absolute blackhole, and its just unacceptable.

The organization can’t allow this to go on. Some kind of significant shakeup has to be made in order to create some kind of new energy. Maybe its sending Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera down to the minors. Maybe its the firing of Pete Mackanin.

But things just aren’t working the way this roster is currently constructed, and if this series against Miami goes as poorly as tonight’s game went, I’d expect some kind of major move to go down during the off day on Thursday.
