The Philadelphia Phillies lost their fourth straight game on Tuesday night, falling to the Cardinals 8-1. Their record drops to 22-47.
On The Mound
- Jeremy Hellickson finally turned in a decent outing, pitching seven strong. Hellickson gave up just one run on six hits.
- Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless eighth.
- Hector Neris pitched a scoreless ninth.
- Pat Neshek kept the game tied with a scoreless 10th.
- Edubray Ramos took over in the 11th, and gave up two runs on two hits and two walks while failing to record an out.
- Casey Fien took over for Ramos, and was obliterated for five runs.
- Luis Garcia mercifully finished off the 11th by recording the final out.
At The Plate
- The offense managed one lousy run on seven hits.
- Maikel Franco drove in the team’s lone run in the fourth inning, finishing 1-4 with a single.
- Odubel Herrera went 2-5 with a couple of singles.
- Howie Kendrick went 3-4 with a walk and three singles.
- Aaron Altherr went 1-4 with a single and a walk.
- Tommy Joseph went 0-5 and left six men on base.
- Daniel Nava started in left, going 0-4.
- Andrew Knapp and Freddy Galvis went a combined 0-8 at the bottom of the order.
Final Thoughts
Earlier on Tuesday, the Phillies finally began to make some changes.
Michael Saunders and Jeanmar Gomez were designated for assignment, removing two of the roster’s biggest disappointments. Gomez had a 7.25 ERA in 18 appearances, and Saunders was barely hitting above .200 after having played his way out of the right field job.
It was good to see Jeremy Hellickson finally put together a solid start. There’s still time for Hellickson to reestablish his trade value, but he’s got to get on a good run between now and the trade deadline.
