Shortly after coming to terms with shooting guard J.J. Redick on a one-year deal, the Philadelphia 76ers added another veteran to the mix, signing forward Amir Johnson to a one-year deal worth $11 million.
Johnson is another solid veteran that brings a good deal of playoff experience to the table from his time with Boston and Toronto. He’s a guy that can either start, or come off of the bench. He’s been credited as a good locker-room guy that brings good energy to both ends of the court.
What role Johnson will play with the Sixers isn’t clear, although I’d think its pretty likely that he’d be one of the first big men off of the bench, although the team already has Dario Saric and Richaun Holmes running at the four and five spots in the second unit. It’s possible signing Johnson is also an insurance policy in the event that Joel Embiid continues to struggle with health issues, this would give the team an experienced big man to plug in whenever they have a need at either the four or five.
Like Redick, this is a solid, low-risk signing that brings another veteran presence to the table without complicating the salary cap in future seasons.
