We all knew immediately that Eagles new head coach Nick Sirianni had the energy and passion to be a good NFL head coach, but I’ve been impressed with his mindset and decision-making so far in this year’s training camp. Of course you continue to hear about his core-values: Connecting, Competition, Accountability, Football I.Q., and Fundamentals. has made regarding the Birds preparation for the upcoming season. This Eagles coaching staff didn’t waste any time of going through the motions in their first practice. After loosening up, they jumped into a competition in the red zone between the offense and the defense.
I like Sirianni’s emphasis on the running game. In Indianapolis, he and Frank Reich built their offense on their running game and I think he’s going to do the same thing here in Philadelphia. The young head coach and his assistant coaches encourage quarterback Jalen Hurts and the other quarterbacks to get the ball out of their hands with short or intermediate throws when possible. They want their quarterbacks to take what’s there and stay away from turnovers.
While the offense is staying away from turnovers, the Eagles defense goes after the football every chance they get. Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon has every defensive player in pursuit of the ball. They try to cause fumbles by ripping the ball out of the hands of ball carriers and they try to create interceptions by going after football when it’s in the air. Unlike Jim Schwartz defenses, Gannon has his secondary turning back toward the ball when It’s in the air. He has his defensive backs going up and trying to get the ball at the highest point.
OFFENSE
Quarterbacks: Eagles number one quarterback Jalen Hurts is getting better on every day of practice. He started out the camp throwing nothing but check downs to the running backs and tight ends. Now he’s starting to throw the ball downfield much more and hitting his intermediate targets. The young quarterback seems to be getting more comfortable in the offense each day. Veteran Joe Flacco and the recently acquired Gardner Minshew are going to be the backups. (Jalen Hurts, Joe Flacco, Gardner Minshew) (3)
Running Backs: The Eagles have tremendous talent and blazing speed among their running backs. Of course we all know about Miles Sanders and he’s having a good camp as both a runner and receiver. The Birds have speed to burn at the position with Boston Scott and fourth round pick Kenneth Gainwell backing up Sanders. With speedy backs on the roster in abundance, if was a good move by Howie Roseman to sign an “In Between The Tackles” running back, Jordan Howard. Howard looks like he’s in great shape and ready to go. (Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Jordan Howard, Kenny Gainwell, Jason Huntley) (5) (8)
Wide Receivers: Number one pick Devonta’ Smith had been having a strong training camp with his route running, sure hands and sneaky speed, but with him sidelined with a knee injury, Jalen Reagor has become more of a target. Hurts has been connecting with last year’s number one pick on short, intermediate and deep routes. Hurts also hooked up with Quez Watkins as the young wide out showed off his blazing speed. The Birds are trying to utilize Travis Fulgham in a way to use his physical prowess to recapture the dominance he displayed for five games a year ago. Greg Ward’s route running and sure hands will likely be utilized in third down situations. John Hightower hasn’t been doing much so far this training camp. Tight Ends: Thus far in camp, the tight ends have been the top targets for Hurts and company. That’s one reason I hope Zach Ertz remains with the Birds. He and Dallas Goedert are both big targets with sure hands. so it’s no surprise that they are being utilized, but Tyree Jackson is a surprise. Nobody expected the former University of Buffalo quarterback, Jackson, to shine. He has done a great job of getting open and catching a large number of passes, but I still see them keeping Richard Rodgers. They definitely need to hang onto Ertz because their wide receivers aren’t dependable and Goedert hasn’t done much in the training camp. ( Dallas Goedert, Zach Ertz, Richard Rodgers) (3) (17)
Offensive Line: The battle at left tackle between Jordan Mailata and Andre Dillard has been lopsided. Mailata has been dominant. He’s been consistent and he seems to be getting better after each practice. The former rugby player has an amazing combination of size and athleticism. Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat just flat out ran over Andre Dillard on one of their first days in pads. There’s no way an offensive tackle should be letting defenders run over him. I wanted to see Dillard get up and attack Sweat, but “He does not have that Dog in him”. Dillard played well against the Jets and that’s why I think he’s going to make the team. Second round pick Landon Dickerson is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered in college, so I don’t think he’s going to play in the 2021 season. DEFENSE
Defensive Line: The Eagles defensive line has won the war so far against the Eagles offensive line in the one-on-one pass drills. Sweat has been dominant as a pass rusher. He’s using his amazing combination of speed and power to standout consistently day after day. Derek Barnett, who’s probably feeling the heat from Sweat, has been having an outstanding training camp of his own. Brandon Graham continues to demonstrate that he still has the ability to play at a hight level. Hopefully, they’ll all play as well during the regular season. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is having a tremendous camp so far. We need to see him take advantage of opposing teams double-teaming Fletcher Cox. I expect big things out of this defensive line. Linebackers: The Eagles linebackers have been visible, but they haven’t been able to show everything that they can do because the team is just starting to practice in pads. We’ve seen Eric Wilson, T.J. Edwards, and Shaun Bradley getting their hands on passes on occasion. Davion Taylor has been sidelined for a few days after being nicked up. The team’s top linebacker from a year ago, Alex Singleton, is still being kept out of the work because of his Covid situation. I think he’ll find his way into the starting lineup along with Wilson by the time the season starts. (Alex Singleton, Eric Wilson, T.J. Edwards, Shaun Bradley, Davion Taylor, JaCoby Stevens) (6) (41)
Cornerbacks: The starters at the cornerback position, Darius Slay and Steve Nelson have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the team’s cornerbacks. Avonte Maddox is at the nickel position and I think he will do well there. The Eagles have been very fortunate to be able to sign Nelson. He looks solid in coverage and seems to have a good understanding of where he needs to be. Birds rookie cornerback Zach McPherson could very well have picked off two passes and run them back for touchdowns, but he hasn’t been able to catch the football. He is having a very good camp so far and getting his hands on the passes consistently. (Darius Slay, Steve Nelson, Avonte Maddox, Craig James, Zach McPherson) (5) (46)
Safeties: At the safety position, Anthony Harris, who played in this system in Minnesota has been playing well. On one play, he came up and let Fulgham know that they had put on the pads. You can see that he’s got a good feel for the defense. Veteran Rodney McLeod seems to be making amazing progress on his rehab, and Marcus Epps is doing a good job in there as a backup. SPECIAL TEAMS
Special Teams: The Eagles are solid in the special teams area with kicker Jake Elliott, punter Arryn Siposs and long snapper Rick Lovato. It’s going to be interesting what they do for kick off returning. On Offense – I don’t see how the Eagles go into the season with only 8 OL due to recent Injuries to
Seuamalo,Brooks and LJ’s from last Season .. I do agree that Dickerson won’t be active for the first 6-8 Weeks and may just be red-shirted for the entire 2021 Season
I believe Juriga, Matt Pryor or L’Raven Clark could be that 9th OL to Make the 53 Man Roster
and think Andre Dillard will get Traded or possibly released
6 WR’S players is too high – I think only 5 WR”s make the 53 Man Roster since they will Carry 3 TE’s and have RB’s active in the Passing Game… and see no room for JJAW on this Roster and Hightower to the Practice Squad and still would be surprised to see the Eagles pick-up a Veteran, Outside WR with some SIze after Cutdowns around the NFL — I like Allen Hurns from the Dolphins at 6-3 198lbs who will have a tough time making the Dolphins Roster
Defensively I think you are 1 Player light at CB and think they will carry 6 CB’s and 4 Safeties as Maddox can be moved to Safety in an emergency situation due to injuries The 6th CB is Josiah Scott to Play in the Slot, Special Teams, etc,etc or even a M Jaquett who has shown improvement and has some great Physical Traits
At DT – I see Draft Pick M Tutu to the Practice Squad with TY McGill making the 53 Man Roster who is having a Strong Camp per most Reports
I also think Rookie Tarron Jackson makes the 53 Man Roster in place of LB Shaun Bradley who gets caught in a Numbers Game and finds himself on the Practice Squad
Also At TE – I See 3 Players Goedart, Rogers and Tyree Jackson making Roster while Ertz to be Traded
by next Weekend, If Ertz remains with the Eagles than Tyree Jackson over Rodgers…
These Back Up Players at almost every Position Group need to be Young Players who can Develop for the Future
and not Veterans who don’t figure much in the future for the Eagles

To me the best 53 as evaluated by coaches and front office taking into account various football / non football issues will make the team, things to consider outside of football: draft capital spent (is there still an upside), contract situation, ability to put on the practice squad. Football issues are obvious can the guy contribute to wins, specials, versatility etc. eagles have typically done a nice job in securing depth that can step in

In 2019 There were 7 off. Tackles chosen between pick 22-41 with Dillard going first. Obviously you can’t account for injuries BUT of the 7 there is one other tackle who played limited games due to injury. The other 5 are starters… offensive tackle historically has the highest hit rate of hi pick being a success. Right now the discussion in the eagles front office has to be “how did we screw that up?”. Part 2 it was luckily mitigated by a grand slam home run drafting Mailata in the 7th. They of course will point to that pick but the fact remains the eagles have been far more successful in later rounds and even UDFA than they have in round 1. Round 1 and 2 you need blue chip players … meaning Reagor, Smith, Dickerson and hurts better be clue chippers
Dillard was Ranked as the Top OT in that 2019 Draft but he fell down the Draft Board due to some concerns about his Overall Strength and Run Blocking ability as he Players at Washington State for a Coach in Mike Leach who passed 50-60 Times a Game and isn’t a believer of the Running Game so Dillard never really developed those Skills while in College… I believe most of us question his Work ethic, desire, football agressiveness and his overall mental toughness to be a Starting OL in the NFL.. His Body language alone tells you he lacks in self-confidence and man you just have to fight,scratch and claw as an OL in the NFL.. The Job Demands this Personality Traits and Dillard seems to be lacking in all these important off the typical Metrics Traits that Scouts use to ever amount to anything in the NFL, I simply cut the Chord and move on …
The real sad thing is that the Eagles did not expect him to fall or be there dropping in that 2019 Draft and then actually moved up a few spots to Select him without ever doing a full workout, interview or doing much homework on his which is why he fell in the first place fro a Top 10 to almost 20th in the Draft
Physically, he has the tools, Mentally, hes not anywhere close and very close to the Marcus Smith type of situation where not enough homework was done with these Young Players
The 2019 Draft Class for OT’s was simply not a very Strong one
Jonah Williams, Andre Dillard, Titus Howard, K McGary were all 1st Round Selections and have not really impressed as Blue Chip Selections in the NFL .. Its always a c crapshoot in the Draft but you have to know what kind of Players Mentally you are Selecting, Not Every West Coast or Deep South or Rural Kid is going to be able to handle playing in Northeast, Blue Collar type of Town with a very demanding Fan Base and Local Media
You have to have that burning desire not only to make the NFL, but to be the Greatest Player you can be and if you don;t have this, you will not make it regardless of where your Draft or what College Program you went to..
I haven’t seen Dillards body language. He didn’t play at all last year and I don’t go to practice so I’m not sure how I could evaluate his body language. There was talk he got off social media and started to embrace being a pro this season. He also reportedly got stronger and more focused. By all accounts he was losing a battle to Mailata before another nagging injury.
I also wholeheartedly disagree with the “handle the northeast blue collar town” thing. OL aren’t in front of the camera aren’t obligated to huge media commitments. That said I’m not a fan of PAC 10 types as a general rule. I think you see busts and gems from all of the conferences and in all NFL towns. I think any college player that comes in and has success will handle whatever city he’s in, same said for a player who struggles he will struggle adjusting. The nfl regardless of what city it is a major pressure cooker with major competition for few jobs
Certain Cities with Rabid Fans/Local Media are much harder to transition to than others
and some Cities are much more openly Critical to Players than others, some Players can handle this and others struggle .. Every Team has Fans and Local Media but Philly Fans and Local Media are about as rabid as there is around the League which is both Good and Bad ..
Listen to Reports from Eagles Camp from G Mosher, J McMullen, DiCeccio, Barrett Brooks, Z Berman, A Caplan, R Frank and many others that Dillard has not really shown any real improvement and is nowhere close in competition with Mailata from Day 1 of Camp and hasn’t really shown the tenacity, the fight, the urgency that is required to play in the NFL
This Kid is way behind and better learn to Play other Positions along the OL or will find himself Released in late August
I hope L’Raven Clark gets healthy in time to become the Swing OT or even B Toth has shown Fight to compete
Paul that isn’t rabid reporting those people you named were all hi on Dillard coming into camp. They simply are now REPORTING (they are reporters) what they see. Dillard and Mailata switched every other day with the first team. The reports came in “Dillard between by sweat” or “Mailata appears to be leading” etc… also if a player in any city is listening to the media then they will fail.
Your quoting those reports aren’t about body language they were about ability. His early reports (pre camp) by those same people were all complimentary of his new found tenacity, focus, fight and urgency…. those guys all thought this was his year BECAUSE of those things. It turns out a leopard can’t change his spots… hopefully they can make him serviceable or even a switch to guard….
All those positive comments were before Camp Actually started and have become more critical once the Pads came on, 2-3 of these Reporters who are actually there stated that his body language looks as a “Player Defeated”
Coaches were keeping the daily switch on and off as playing the reps to keep Dillards Confidence up and to display a legitimate, open competition when all who have actually watched Practices have stated time and time again that its not a close competition at all and that Dillard simply has not been up to the task so he can talk all he wants in Press Conferences but the proof is in the pudding and on the tape and the Dillard Experiment has been a complete failure
Now that hes injured again, its unlikely he’ll get any other reps at other Positions or play in any Pre-Season Games where maybe some other Team would took a chance on him via a trade.. He will be cut by the end of Camp

Went back and looked over twitter from M. Hayes, J. McClane and E.S.P. 3 guys really plugged in. I looked through twitter, BGN and Philly Inquirer and all 3 say about the same thing about Dillard. I see zero about body language other than in one Mclane article Dillard got beat, tweaked a knee or ankle and he looked frustrated at the injury. They also all simply reported. AD is losing the competition which is simply observation reporting based on watching drills. All knew this was the battle to watch in camp and they watched it and reported on it like they are supposed to do.

Paul one thing you have made 100% clear and after all these years of whacky posts it dawned on me by a few things you’ve said recently about the phils, about the eagles making the playoffs, about downgrading great performances (no hitters, championships etc) is that you really don’t understand or like competition. Dillard and mialata alternated days yet in your world that’s an “over with “ competition…. Mialata was winning the competition clearly but that doesn’t mean that it’s over… couple weeks ago you said the phils should sell because making the playoffs as an underdog wasn’t worth it and the examples go on and on… I’ve never met a less competitive guy who just throws in the towel like you… I guess it’s your negativity and passive aggression… it’s simple math that all but 1 team will be ultimately unsuccessful so just come out with the negative and you are right. Then in the case when your team is the last team standing you justify your negativity by saying who they beat was no good etc…
That is a shitty way to be a fan
10 minutes into preseason game 1 analysis. Oth teams keeping it vanilla. Hargrove will be a standout player, he and fox should be formidable on the inside. Hurts is tough to evaluate … but I think he will be good.

First half observations: OL and DL will be very good- young guys on the DL will rotate in, both are deep. 4 RBs will contribute, Watkins is explosive— Jake Elliot seems to have rebounded 3 long and solid field goals. Jackson/dick rod is going to be an interesting situation. for a new team w/new coaching staff penalties weren’t bad– thru a quarter and a half they had zero but as the second teamers played more they got a couple.
Second half- bunch of guys filling out the bottom of the roster, gonna get sloppy– time for bed.
Lurie announced tre thomas and Jon Runyon going into eagles HOF– Lurie stated that when they signed Runyon that he was the highest paid LINEMAN in the league- oops a highly paid RT— that was BEFORE THE Read option etc– ugh PM just gets it wrong.

Rodgers not playing either. In reality most teams have maybe 2-3 position battles – eagles Dillard/Mailata, dick rod/Jackson but 95% of preseason games is to fill out the depth near the bottoms of the roster.
I really think the nfl could fill the void and still charge fans money by having 2-3 tri-scrimmages like HS teams do. Only turn it into a night time event at the stadium. It could be non stop action with 2 scrimmages going on simultaneously on each end of the field. Play to “thud” tackle , red pinnies on the QBs.it would be a great event.

As I’ve said for about a year now…. Howie on his year exile looked at management structure of successful clubs in different sports and then hired a consultant who was an ex Man U president. The eagles management philosophy is a real top down one. Doug bought in for awhile but in the end he’s an old school guy…. we are going to have a revolving door of coaches… not saying they won’t have success but it will be young fresh guys who want the opportunity…management has this approach… top down

Eagles have both Barnett, Josh Sweat and R Kerrigan who’s Contracts are all Up after 2021
It’s very unlikely they they are able to sign both Barnett and Sweat to Big Extensions that they will likely command on the open market if they both have big Seasons in 2021
With the Eagles having Graham, Milton Williams under contract for 2022 and could probably bring back Kerrigan for another Season, they may have to roll the dice on re-Signing either Barnett or Sweat but not both..
Do note that they also have other Players who are due for Extensions like Geodart, Mailata, possibly Sanders and then 20 others Players who are currently on 1 year deals would likely want to retain some of these (Harris,Singleton, Nelson,Wilson,Maddox, Howard,Flacco,Scott,etc,etc_

Anyone who has followed the occupation/peace keeping,nation building situation in Afghanistan for the last 20 years knew this current situation was an inevitable whether we left in 2005, 2010, 2015,2020 or in 2025,2030 or 2040 or whenever ..

1) Is 70-75 Minutes of Camp Practice Time actually long enough to Prepare for a Season
2) Are Starters going to be able to Perform well Week One without getting much “game time” together in Pre-Season ..
3) Eagles Depth is not as Good or Deep as many Thought
4) Eagles have Scored only 3 Points in the last 90 Minutes of Actual Football versus the Steelers and Patriots Backups and 3’s.. Back-ups or Not Playing for the Eagles, where’s the competency of running an Offense
5) QB Mac Jones looks pretty good as a Rookie, Seem to have a nice grasp of their Offense and knows where to go with the ball and is accurate
6) I doubt any Starters will be even suited up for the Final Pre-Season Game vs the Jets as most Teams don’t want to risk injury in the Final Game of the Summer and want the back end Players get as much game tape as possible before getting Released , I guess Sirianna will hang his hat on the element of Surprise to the Falcons for that 1st Game who won’t have much to go on tape wise on what this Offense and Defense will actually look like scheme wise

I’ve been following training camp and preseason ‘game’ stories pretty closely. As I predicted years ago the ‘games’ will be going away. Teams get so much more out of ‘live reps’ against an opponent during the week than they do the ‘games’– It has been only a money grab for years and the importance of them for coaches has been diminishing. practicing against an opponent and playing to ‘thud’ is safer and teams can practice situations etc, they can do re-do’s, do teaching moments etc.– One beat reporter said today that the practice film from the two joint practices is probably enough to determine cuts etc.
IMO they should just make the joint practices night time, $20 a seat goes to charity… then up the regular season ticket prices a few bucks– remember as with any business its about the bottom line
No Doubt that the Joint Practices are the way to go in the NFL ..
I believe that in a Year or 2 the Pre-Season will be wilted down to 2 Games at most
with Teams having 2 Joint Workouts with nearby Clubs..
I also see a 18 Game Regular NFL Schedule which would spread out over 20 Weeks giving Teams 2 Bye Weeks between Weeks #4 and #12
and Rosters Extended to 57-58 Man Rosters with An Active Day Game Roster for 50 instead of this ridiculous 46 Man Game Day Rosters which I’ve never understood this Rule
