I was truly pleased at the way the Super Bowl ended because it was ultimately Bill Belichick who cost the Patriots another title and a perfect season. He didn't make the necessary adjustments with his offense, made a horrific decision and that proved to be the difference in the game.
You could see by the way Belichick stormed the field before the game was over and left pouting, that he has no more character than the brats in the league who pout when they don't get the ball. On top of that Belichick lied that he didn't know that there was a second left on the clock. He went off the field like a brat who didn't get his way. I think his arrogance cost the Patriots the game but the media as usual gave him a pass.
First of all, New England should have gone to a no huddle offense. You saw on that next to last drive which produced a score, the Giants defensive line got tired and Tom Brady had little trouble moving the ball downfield. I know you saw that Giants defensive line sucking air on the sideline and cramping. They didn't have much left. That should have been the strategy, get the New York defensive line fatigued by going to the no-huddle. It always works. That's the only solution when your offensive line can't block the opposing defensive line.
Once the Patriots could have tired out that defensive line, Brady could have got the ball to his receivers and it would have been bombs away. But Bill the Brat wasn't thinking because he was so intent on blowing the Giants out of the game. This game was about him and not his football team.
I was afraid New England was going to make the adjustment of going to the no huddle during the game, but I was stunned when they didn't do it. I'm sure Belichick has looked at the tape by now and realized his mistake.
The young Patriots offensive coodinator Josh McDaniels isn't that special. The kid relied on Randy Moss getting deep and didn't know how to make adjustments by putting him motion and lining him up in different spots. They had no intermediate game even though, defenders were playing off of Moss. They could have run come back routes of 15 to 20 yards all day long. Bill Walsh never let teams take Jerry Rice out of the game. The 49ers were going to throw the ball to Rice whether you liked it or not.
The other mistake which Belichick made was passing up the field goal and going for it on 4th and 13. He knew his line couldn't keep Strahan, Umenyiora and Tuck off of Brady but his arrogance forced him to go for it.
You know his players realize he cost them.
