Vinatieri and Stover can make history

Who doesn’t love articles about kickers?¬† Well tough, here’s one for you.¬† Matt Stover will make history in next weekend’s Super Bowl and Adam Vinatieri has a chance to as well.

Barring an injury, Stover will absolutely make Super Bowl history.  He turns 42-years old on Wednesday which will make him the oldest player to ever play in a Super Bowl game.  Good for him.

But the piece of history that Vinatieri has a chance to make is extremely interesting to me.¬† Yes, Vinatieri was deactivated for Sunday’s game against the Jets, but he’s still on the roster.¬† Chances are, he’ll be deactivated again in two weeks for the Super Bowl.

But, if the Colts win, he joins an ultra-elite group.¬† Only one player in NFL history has won five Super Bowl rings as a player.¬† Charles Haley won two with the 49ers and three with the Dallas Cowboys.¬† Not Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice….none of them have five.¬† Only Charles Haley.¬† Well, if the Colts beat the Saints, Vinatieri will get his fifth ring.¬† He was with the Patriots when they beat the Rams, Panthers and Eagles, and then he was with the Colts when they beat the Bears.¬† Win one more and he’s in the history books yet again.¬†
