Ron Jaworski Weighs In On McNabb & Kolb

Ron Jaworski delivered the keynote address at the 43rd Salem County Chamber of Commerce Shad Dinner last night at the Centerton Country Club in Pittsgrove, NJ. Jaworski delivered a lively 20 minute speech during which he talked about the Eagles quarterback situation.

Jaworski called McNabb the best quarterback in Eagles history. He compared McNabb’s career with the Eagles to his own, and to that of Randall Cunningham. Three great quarterbacks each of whom had 10 year careers with the Eagles. Each of whom had to also face the fact that one day the team would be ready to move on from them. The time  came for the team to move on from McNabb, just as it came for Jaws, and just as it came for Cunningham. Jaworski said he had mentioned to McNabb about a year ago that this day was going to come, and that he should prepare for it.

Regarding the Eagles decision to move on, Jaws said: “In this game, there is no gray area; win and we love you, lose and you’re a bum! It’s that simple. Unfortunately, the way the season ended, with the tough losses at the end of the year, the Eagles felt it was time to move on.”

Jaworski went on to say that he has confidence in Andy Reid with respect to making this decision:

“Andy Reid is a smart guy. He is the winningest coach in franchise history. He has been in 5 NFC championship games, and has made the playoffs in 8 of 11 years.  He knows what he’s doing. He knows he’s had a good quarterback in Kevin Kolb backing up Donovan McNabb.”

Jaworski then weighed in on new starter Kevin Kolb. Just as Jaws was 10 year starter, and Randall was a 10 year starter, Jaws believes that Kevin Kolb will be the next 10 year starter for the Birds:

“I really believe this, I really believe this truly, that Kevin Kolb will be the next quarterback for a decade for the Philadelphia Eagles.  He’s that good.  He has a good receiving core, a good offensive line. I think Kevin Kolb will be an outstanding quarterback.’

Jaworski has the best perspective of this quarterback transition because he was once the subject of it. Jaworski understands the decision made by the Eagles, and he certainly understands McNabb’s point of view. If Jaws is right in his assessment of Kolb, then Eagles fans can breathe easier, the next franchise quarterback is here.

Jaws, can you ask Jon Gruden if he wants his old OC job back?

Jaws is one of the best football minds out there. I say that b/c he would make a great G.M., NFL owner.
I also think he’s having too much fun doing all the other things he does to consider it.
He is a class guy.

I respectfully disagree with Jaws. There is no way that McNabb is at the same level as Cunningham or Jaws. How many games did Cunningham carry the offense by himself running the ball and leaping like a gazelle over his opponents? He was the best QB in Eagles’ history. That is not to denigrate McNabb. If he plays with a receiver like Mike Quick, his stats will be impressive. It will be interesting to see what he can accomplish without Reid’s influence.

We eventually booed Jaworski. We eventually booed Randall. And in the end, we booed McNabb. And given the opportunity, we will boo Kolb. This article is just about when we will boo him. I hope he makes it for 10 years like the other guys, and I hope he’s the one who will bring us a Superbowl. The only one I don’t remember us booing was Norm Van Brocklin, who I still think of fondly because he was the only one who took us to the promised land!
