Rollins Sounds Off On Cliff Lee and McNabb Trades

Phillies all-star shortstop Jimmy Rollins talked to Dan Patrick on his national radio show and had some strong words to say about why the Phils traded away Cliff Lee.

On why couldn’t the Phillies afford to keep Cliff Lee:

“That, I have no idea. I’m sure we could afford him. We turned nearly 4 million people through the turnstiles last year. I don’t know. You should have (Phillies GM) Ruben (Amaro) on here… When the trade happened, I actually got a text from Jayson Werth and he was like, ‘What are we doing?’ And I was like, ‘Didn’t we get Halladay?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, but we traded Lee.’ And my mouth dropped like, ‘That wasn’t part of the deal.’ I really don’t know. I thought we had enough to keep him. I thought we could have done enough to keep him. I guess that’s just a move the Yankees do… That’s just the truth. The Yankees would have been like, ‘Hey, we got a chance to keep both of them. We’ll pay them both for a year or two and we got a chance to win a championship.’”

Rollins also commented on the trading of Donovan McNabb.

“Whew. Well, I like Donovan in an Eagles’ uniform. Obviously, when you go to a place you have three quarterbacks and you haven’t won a Super Bowl, everybody starts to get upset and someone has to go. In baseball, we always know it’s the manager. In football, I guess it’s easier to deal a quarterback.”

J Roll is right about Cliff Lee the players want to win now that don’t give a damn about the farm system or players that might or might not help after their gone and retired.

It’s amazing what winning will do. If this were the eagles we would be hearing about how much of a cheap *** Joe banner is for letting a player like this walk and questioning the desire to win. It’s the Phillies though so no shots at ruben amaro.

Here it is folks. They should have kept Lee for this year. In the scope of things the 9mill is no big deal (yes no big deal) the prospects are worth way less than having your starting rotation be Halliday, Lee, Hammels, Happ, Blanton.

If we were the yanks that would be our rotation.

I think they should have kept Lee and gone for it all this year. Relying on the likes of Hamels, Happ and Moyer scares the crap outta me.

While I love Jrol, and I certainly listen when he speaks, you gotta remember that the players will always take players’ side v. management. And the bottom line is that Jrol was never at the conference table, sitting in front of the team budget, with all the cards on the table. While he’s credible and interesting, that doesn’t make him any more objective, he’s got a clear bias.
