“Nothing is imminent” regarding Garcia return

Rumors are swirling that former Philadelphia Eagles QB Jeff Garcia could return for a second third stint with the team. However, Philadelphia Daily News scribe Lew Bowen reports that “nothing is imminent” with regards to his return.

Bowen spoke with a source close to the team as well as a source close to Garcia and both said this is definitely a possibility, but not a done deal.

Chances are, Garcia won’t come back to Philly unless Michael Vick is gone. And we won’t know for sure what will happen with him probably at least until the draft later this month. As G. said before, Garcia wants to start, which means that you’d have three QB’s on the roster that all think they are starters. Doesn’t sound like a recipe for success.

One of the things I always loved about A.J. Feeley as a third-stringer for the Eagles was that he knew his role and he knew he was a third-string QB. Did he want to start? Sure, otherwise he wouldn’t be in the NFL. But he knew that wasn’t going to happen, certainly not in Philly. He accepted his role.

So we’ll see what happens, but I’d swap Vick for Garcia in a heartbeat. I’ve said before that I’m not remotely a fan of Michael Vick on the field or off of it. Good riddance. Take off and take your $5 million or so in salary and bonuses and hit the road. Backups don’t make that much in this league and you can be certain that Joe Banner is aware of that.

I’d like to see them bring in Garcia (assuming that he understands that he’s a backup. I know you want to start, Jeff, but settle down) and kick Vick to the curb. You saw what they got for Donovan in trade, so just assume that you’ll get an intern or two (at most) in return, suck it up and move him.

Join me and the other GCobb.com¬† writers at P.J. Whelihan’s on Rte. 70, in Cherry Hill on Monday night April 12th at 7pm.¬† We’re going to do a mock draft and go through all of the options that the Eagles will have in the first round.

Bring your friends and come on by to talk about the Philadelphia Eagles and the new Kevin Kolb era.

Ill be there P.J.’s wings are the best!

But anywho. When its all said and done Jeff will be an Eagle by Thursday. Im not a big fan of mike vick either and this wildcat thing needs to go. To me one of the Major goals is to BEAT DALLAS. Im sitting here asking myself… Who is more capable of beating Dallas. The Eagles, or the Skins? Last year the Skins lost to Dallas 6-7 and later 17-0. If Mcnabb was the QB on the skins last year I say the Skins would have won at least one of those games (which is more than we beat Dallas last year) So I say right now Skins have the advantage in that category.. But we shall see.

@ Jimmy Mac

It will be a crazyyyyyy draft this year. Could you imagine if the Rams take Suh instead of Bradford? it would screw up the whole draft board.

i agree with jimmy mac, this draft is going to be very entertaining. i personally believe the eagles will trade up to get a player who can make an immediate impact on defense. i also think the eagles trade vick on draft day/draft a QB in the forth/sign marc bulger to back up KK.

I love this new 3 day format because rounds 2 and 3 are your value rounds. Here you can get quality players without having to gamble high stakes bonus money. The birds may have already proved this theory with the selection of Kolb and Jackson. Talk about impact in the 2nd. Wow.

please can Garcia just go away, we don’t need him as a backup I’d rather they go after Bulger. Keep Vick what the hell name another back up as good as he is? All this is a moot point anyway remember fans Kolb is the next great thing.

I think Garcia makes perfect sense. You bring him in to back up for 1 or 2 years and then you let this years developmental guy take over that role and draft another guy.

Let’s not be ungrateful. Garcia was great for the Eagles, and a real gentleman. Played well, loved the team and respected the fans.

Seriously, who cares about Jeff Garcia? It’s not like he’s going to put you over the top. I don’t know why there’s so much news around this. I personally don’t want him on the team. So if Kolb gets injured or plays poorly, Jeff Garcia is going to come in and lead us to a first round playoff loss? Come on

Garcia has a hot wife. Don’t forget that we have a need there with Feeley gone.

The Eagles have been at most of the pro day work out for QB’s this year including Skelton out of Fordham, Tall guy with a strong arm like Bradford, kinda reminds me of Derek Anderson but could learn this system through the years.. Armanti Edwards of App State.. only 5’11 but has the skills of a Mike Vick and some.. Not as strong armed as Vick but can contribute right away.. Also T. Pike of Cinci, D Clark of Penn St., and M. Bulger I dont think will come here. Maybe Pittsburgh where hes from.. How about T Jack from Minnesota.. Id give up a 4th round pick for him.

Best QB projects..
T Pike is a solid player with lot of injuries in his past, probably go mid-late 3rd Round
Look at Jarrett Brown from West Virginia, very raw but very athletic late 3rd-early 4th Rd,
I also like M Kafka from Nortwestern late 4th to late 5th round….
My Sleeper pick is the kid from U of Richmond EricWard, Big,athletic, 3 year starter on a very well-coached program… I believe he can be the next D Culpepper/D McNabb type of QB in about
2-3 years time if he gets with the right team/coaches.

For once I agree with Paulman draft Pike early or draft any QB early. They have to take a QB early they cant be sold on Kolb and if he isnt the answer they have to have a back up plan for 2011. They have to be concerned with the future of the QB on this team. They have a good young core of players on the offense of side of the ball. And if Kolb works out develop the Draft pick and trade if for a 1st or 2nd rounder.

Well, Garcia came in last year knowing that there were four QBs in camp already so I don’t see an ego issue becoming a problem. Looking at the KC game last year (which provides decent insight for what will happen this year) Roughly Kolb threw the ball 25% of the time Vick was in to run the ball 25% of the time and they ran the ball 50% of the time. With that as a blueprint, if Kolb eventually gets yanked or goes down to injury and Vick goes down to injury it would leave the Eagles with one QB. It makes the most sense for the Eagles to keep 4 QBs just because Kolb will probably end up splitting time with Vick making them equally vulnerable to injury at the least.

I don’t know why people keep bringing up Tony Pike, I don’t even know if that guy is going to be a legit back-up in the NFL. If the Eagles are going to reach for someone they’ll have a better shot at it turning into something if they draft John Skelton.

LOL Big E,

Defense is where this team needs the most help. I think Bulger makes more sense unless he may be too much of a threat to Kolb?

Bulger would make sense if he was willing to take back up money. I would think Buffalo would be all over this guy as a stop gap. He costs nothing but cash. Bulger would give them a starter now while developing a guy like Clausen,Tebow or what have you.

The eagles need a pure back up vet. Not a guy who wants to be paid like a starter.
