There's a battle going on in the NFL Players Association between Gene Upshaw and Troy Vincent.
Previously Vincent was the association president and Upshaw was the executive director but that has changed.
Vincent was moved out from his president position and moved to assistant executive director behind Gene. I had thought that he was secure in that position but I've now learned that Clark Gaines has taken over that position. Now Vincent is out.
From what I hear, Vincent's ouster out of the NFLPA was a move by Upshaw because he and Vincent didn't see eye to eye on a number of issues.
I dont' think Vincent likes the fact that the players association and representing the players has become a side issue.
The main focus of Gene Upshaw and the group that was supposed to be representing the players is now a lucative business in selling the rights of players for video games and trading cards.
Upshaw received a $2 million dollar bonus a year ago for the video game and trading card business. He receives a $4 million dollar salary which is amazing.
The move by Baltimore's Matt Stover yesterday to try to unseat Upshaw was part of the battle going on between Upshaw and Vincent. They had attempted a coup to unseat Upshaw during the meetings they had had in Hawaii at the beginning of the off season.
We will see where this heads.
