Maclin Is Ready To Step Up To Or Near Jackson’s Level

Jeremy Maclin is set to have a big jump in production this year because his confidence and understanding of the offense is light years ahead of what it was at this time a year ago.

I could tell by the way he was going out to line up during the mini camp that he’s more confident about what he’s doing.¬† There will be no wondering about what he’s doing when he leaves the huddle.

I was told by a source in the organization that he has been making it a point to go up to wide receiver coach David Culley’s office and look at video with him and ask questions because he wants to get better.

I’ve heard he said he wants people to be talking about him in much the same way they’re talking about fellow Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

I think this is healthy competition and it’s good for the football team.¬† If individuals get better, then the team gets better.

Maclin has gotten stronger from his offseason work in the Eagles weight room.  This will allow him to break more tackles and use that strength to get off of jams at the line of scrimmage.

I expect him to take some balls away from defenders because he’s stronger.¬† He’s six-foot and has great leaping ability so Kevin Kolb will have the option of putting the ball up and letting him go get it.

The young second year receiver is¬† going to be able to play the game faster because he’s surer of what he’s doing.¬† He’ll be able to run his routes with more speed because he’s able to read coverages quicker and he’s sure about when he’s doing.

This is a huge factor because this will make  him a fraction of a second faster in reading the defense and running the route which is huge in terms of NFL football.  You know how big a difference there is between a 4.5 and 4.4 or 4.3 forty yard dash.

It’s astounding how quickly Maclin picked up the offense a year ago.¬† He’s a sharp young man in much the same way Jackson is from a standpoint of deciphering plays.

This young man came into the league last year as a raw 21-year old receiver who had never played in an offense with any similarity to the west coast offense.

In college he had played in the spread offense where they had no reads during the routes.  They would just run to a spot or run deep.

Many times in the west coast offense a wide receiver has to read the defense and read the way he’s being covered on the run and then make it a point to run the apropiate route.¬† If they run the wrong route and they’re not on the same page as the quarterback, an interception is the result.

He picked it up quickly a year ago and only made a few costly mistakes.¬† He won’t make any of those mistakes this year.

It’s important that Jackson and Maclin keep their relationship healthy because chances are one will have a big game then the next week the other will have a big game.

I don’t think Jackson is going to be the clear number one receiver because of the advancement of Maclin, so they have to respect each other’s talent and importance to the team and put the team before their own accomplishments.

This is really a good problem to have as long as they treat each other with respect and put the team first.¬† Of course it’s not in the best interest of the media for them to always have a healthy relationship.

Kolb will have a role to play in this and he should monitor the relationship between the two and make sure that everybody knows their contributions are appreciated.

This doesn’t have to be done in full view of the media but all of these youngsters must realize that the team comes first and foremost.

They can enjoy a lot of success together if they value their relationship and keep it healthy.

I have DJ and Maclin both getting 1000+ yrds each this year..but Jackson will have the better year..he’s too explosive..Maclin is big enough to get off the jam and last year teams wer too tentative to press DJ becuz he’s too quick to get jammed and if they miss he’s 10 Ted’s behind them in a flash..All I can say is DJ, Maclin, Avant, Celek, McCoy, Weaver and n accurate kolb..this I way too exciting. I will go n say we will have the number one O in the NFL..

I too think we will have an explosive offense…but the real key will be…sustaining drives.

By sustaining drives we will be keeping the defense off of the field. That is the key. Too many times last year we put a tired defense out there, and it showed. The defense will get better simply from being on the field less. It will give them time to view photos and make adjustments while the offense is driving.

phillywill…it’s called watching game film. go back and watch the games he played. go back and watch the preseason games he played. you can clearly see the accuracy. the are certain things you look for when evaluating a qb. his footwork, his arm position, his release…etc. some of these things translate to arm strength and some translate to accuracy.

with our previous qb, he had the arm strength. but many times from throwing the ball with such velocity, he lost accuracy. that’s why you saw the high throws and the ground balls. with our current qb, he has the accuracy. he knows which window to throw the ball through to deliver it on time. that you can clearly see…

so you can criticize him all you want if you don’t like him…but facts are facts and tape doesn’t lie. so if you really want to know if he is accurate or not, then go watch the tape. if not, then just keep making your blind accusations.

If kolb so accurate why is he interception prone…Until he proves he can be accurate consistently and not throw 3 picks every other game then u cant call kolb accurate. Since a qb has to throw ball perfect everytime to be considered accurate.. why are all players not held to that standard.. Our defense missed more tackles last year then any year Andy been here.. Dropped passes missed blocks bad playcalling …if they had an accuracy stat for defense pertainng to missed tackles ormissed blocks on offense how would the eagles have ranked last year

EagleBeliever
EagleBeliever
May 14, 2010 8:15 am

phillywill….no i watch game film.

yes he threw a pick in balt. but he drove the team down the field to the 1 yard line. the coach called a pass instead of a run. and he got picked on a short field. yes he threw the pick, but he didn’t make the play call.

the saints game was his first NFL start and he tore it up. the 1st pick was an ACCURATE ball. the LB was masked in coverage and broke from his zone to pick the ball. it was a better defensive play more so than a bad throw.

i watch games 2 or 3 times during the course of a week. i also get as much film of a guy i want to know everything about as possible.

And the point about interceptions is noted. But you have to realize that not all interceptions are created because the QB isn’t accurate. If you go back and look at the INT’s you will notice that the ball is thrown where it was suppose to be thrown. Now you can chalk it up to a bad decision by the QB, most def. And you can also give the defense credit for reading the route and jumping it. But just because a QB throws a pick doesn’t mean the ball wasn’t accurate. Case in point – when Manning threw that pick in the superbowl, the ball was thrown right on the dime. It was an accurate throw. Reggie Wayne didn’t break out of his route like he was suppose to, and the defensive back made a great play to jump the route.

EagleBeliever
EagleBeliever
May 14, 2010 8:20 am

Bottom line is Accuracy isn’t defined by the number of INT’s thrown. It’s defined by completion percentage.

Steve Young was perhaps the most accurate passer of all time, because of completion percentage, not because of INT’s. In 93 he threw 16 INT’s but had a 68% completion percentage to take his team to the Conf. Championship. That’s accuracy.

the pick peyton threw was peyton fault r u fuckin kifddin me he scouted their check down when saints blitz and was waitin dont talk 2 me anymore i now c u dont have a clue bottom line in 3 games we seen kolb he’s thrown 2 picks to end games i could careless how accurate u r if u r gonna throw a 7 yard out to a 5-8 wr on our 25 yardline which gets picked 6 and change the game game over get used to it

cant believe u blamed peyton pick on reggie wayne no how bout credit the cb who scouted the colts blitz checkdowns and peyton didnt read it right and made a bad decision period bet peyotn would like 2 have that throw back i bet he wouldnt go to reggie again on that play

EagleBeliever
EagleBeliever
May 14, 2010 8:56 am

i gave credit to the saints db. like i said “the defensive back made a great play to jump the route.”

but seriously man, go back and watch reggie wayne run that route. the film doesn’t lie. he didn’t break out of his route like he ALWAYS does. peyton threw the ball to the spot where he thought Wayne would be because he read the blitz. Yes, peyton threw the ball, but like i said previously INT’s aren’t soley based on poor accuracy. The route a WR runs and the play of DB factor in heavily.

And you must not watch the games….it was 17-13 at half time during the saints game. they came out of the half and scored a td to make it 24-13. then kolb threw that INT. and every QB in the league throws a 7 yard out, despite if they are on the 25 yard line or the 45 yard line. Again, that was the play call. Don’t get me wrong i’m not saying it wasn’t a bad decision to throw that ball. The QB should of read the LB.

Kolb was 14 for 22 (63%) with 196 yards and 1 TD in the 1st half….so like i said..go back and watch your game film.

Or just keep making stupid biased comments…

I don’t want to hear another word about accuracy Look, Kolb better end up being better than Mcnabb straight up!!!!! Any thing less is failure. Mcnabb name alone made this team perrenial contenders and you knew what you were getting day in and day out. BIG PLAYS!!!!! This team led the league in BIG PLAYS!!!! more than once and we can not act as. if Mcnabb was not behind center leading these stats. He seemed pretty accurate when we acquired T.O. and Desean Jackson was voted to a few pro bowls behind Mcnabbs arrn and tutorlage, so folks be careful what you ask for. When a player is replaced it’s to upgrade the position, so it’s fair to say that if the quarterback position is not improved this year that the move to Kolb was a failure. If this guy kolb stink up the joint I do not want to hear you guys say next offseason he was technically a rookie and we need to give him a chance.. You all are saying he knows the system and he’s ready after 4 seasons in the shadow. You better be right.!! If the QB position is not improved this year..Kolb is a failure, and we don’t have to say what happens to the season. No improvement…no playoffs. You heard it here first……This team will struggle to get 6 wins. p.s. Mcnabb not only know how to win games, he very seldom lose game through stupid interceptions..I’ll take that over so called accuracy any day. Remember if Kolb stats dont’ compare to Mcnabb’s stats last year ..this move was a mistake.

Except that all of the QB’s you mentioned have more wins than loses. In fact Marino, Elway & McNabb are far better in the W’s than the L’s. Pennington even has more W’s and L’s and I don’t think he’s that good.

Songs…you are still here?

And no it is not a failure if Kolb doesn’t do better than McNabb next year….once again you are wrong. The move was made not simply for next year. Just like when McNabb was drafted. He wasn’t made the starter simply for the next year. He was made the starter because he had to become the franchise for the next decade…which he did. But if you recall, even McNabb’s first year in the league was not good. So to say that Kolb HAS to be better than McNabb in his first year is both unfair, and illogical.

Next, Kolb doesn’t HAVE to be better than McNabb. He simply has to play the way he knows how to play and help the team win. If in 5 years Kolb’s numbers are not close to McNabb’s but he wins a superbowl…what will you say then? He got lucky? He had a better team?

There are many reasons you make a change at certain positions. It’s not necessarily to upgrade. The one thing you were right about, McNabbs completion percentage was the highest in 2004. Do you think it was a coincidence that we went to the superbowl? He never came close to that completion percentage again.

For the last time, you have to get it through your head….no one here is saying McNabb was a bad QB. We liked McNabb, we know he is the best we’ve every had. We don’t denounce what he did in midnight green…it was simply just time to move on. That time was inevitable. It comes for all players in the NFL.

First off, I was saying he doesn’t have to be better than him next year like you said. All i’m saying is what defines better? Better stats? Better W-L record? Is he better if he wins a superbowl?

From your post I took it as if Kolb doesn’t put up the same numbers as McNabb then he is a bust. Which is not true. Kolb can be statistically lower than McNabb in every category but still bring this city a superbowl..and in many peoples eyes that would equal better.

Also, like I said there are many reasons to move a player. Contract, money, trade value etc…It’s not as simple as you make it seem. You don’t necessarily have to have a “better” back up to move a player. Because sometimes moving ONE player makes the TEAM better. Even if that player wasn’t as good as his back up. It’s the business of football.

McNabb was the Philadelphia Eagles best QB of ALL TIME. So to say that Kolb has to be better than that before he even played a season is unfair. Kolb simply has to play football like he knows how to play it and help the team win a superbowl. If that makes him better than McNabb than so be it. But you can’t write him off as a bust if he isn’t better than him next year.

I gave the stats because people say kolb is so accurate like that means he is gonna win a superbowl…. Based off completion% Chad pennington is the most accurate passer in the HISTORY of the NFL. And eagle believer agrees that pennington is not that good… Exactly my point about kolb.. According to stats barely higher completion% than mcnabb with only few games compared to a 10+ year career in mcnabb…. So when people constantly say how accurate kolb is it’s really not the truth…pick another reason why you think he is good

however, i do agree that high completion percentage doesn’t equal a superbowl. but you can’t say that kolb isn’t accurate. just look at his throws and the games he’s played since college. the one thing you can say about him is he is accurate. and every coach, analyst or scout has said the same.

you can’t say he won’t win just because other QB’s who were accurate haven’t won anything…that’s illogical

Eagle B – do you coach.. you sound like a coach or someone with ‘above average’ playing experience – I mean this in a good way. Its rare to find someone on these boards that ‘gets it’ that understands ‘accuracy’ and INTs are not the same thing -you can be accurate as hell and not read the coverage right or read the coverage right and make a bad (high) throw, both of which lead to INTs. But only one is caused by accuracy.

I agree with your analysis and assessment of Kolb as a QB. His mechanics and movement are excellent. I think his biggest issue has been recognizing coverages at ‘NFL’ speed, which I think given an entire training camp and pre-season as the #1 will help. I think the O will break the season yardage and point totals this year – they will own every statistical season record (except for rushing yards) by an eagles team. It will be fun to watch

@ phillywill…how do i know if 4 is accurate…well..i have been attending 90% of the eagles training camp for the past 15+ years u dumba$$…so when i see kolb running the scout team and picking our D apart with all backups…his picks that he throw are not because there inaccurate..its his timing is off..which will be corrected with more time with the first team O..and more NFL starts..McPoops have been disgusting passes that look like punts..
..interception prone huh..take a look at 5s picks and turnovers in the postseason…24td passes..15 picks..12 fumbles..wheres the ball security and on top of all that hes inaccurate…
if u guys are guna put the picks on him when he came in as a backup ur truly and idiot..and oim guessing when Peyton came out his rookie year and had 20+ picks he sucked too(im not comparing kolb to payton)..and he had guys like Marvin on his team..Kolb will be excellent, its all about game speed..And phillywill ur prolly some fat kid who cant tie his own shoes..lol..read the headline of the article u fool…and comment on the topic..im out like a fat girl playing dodgeball..

Since they are rebuilding this might be an opportunity to get in the top 5 in the draft next year and get a quarterback….What’s your thought guys?

Everyone knows Shanahan can work an offensive line with schemes and even if you compare our o-line to the redskins last year, you clearly see it’s even or the Redskins might have been a tad better. When we played the Redskins Campbell was hardly touched..on the other hand our o-line was a weak spot all year. Look at what Dallas did to our O-line not once but twice. This team will be very predictable this year and that means since kolb get’s the ball out early there will be many jumped routes, picked 6’s, and press coverage. not to mention kolb moves with all the allusiveness of a store manequin. There’s a revolving door in the center of our line that Reid still refuses to address but you feel good fans are excited. Reid will not address this, the same way he convinced you we were fine without receivers, and the way he had you excited about not needing a returner, or the year he said he would do fine without a fullback. yeah..remember he claimed the scheme didn’t need top linebackers? This year keep your eye on “CENTER”, the new blind spot and hope your offense can run with a river of behemoths up the middle every other snap, leaving some of these young weapons everyone is talking about to stay in the backfield to chip and block taking them out of the gameplan. What is wrong with getting a top pedigree at Center opposed to these experiments Castillo have to fabricate in the lab? Remember Honeybuns? Are we anything near the saints or cowboys? No…The basement is caling..”TIMES YOURS”

One more thing silencer…The Saints and Cowboys have better Coaches . JJ have covered Reids oversized rear end for a decade…now it’s being exposed and there’s not enough cotton in Utah to make the undies to cover his Ass.

Get your paperbags ready…We finally get receivers and we ship out the quarterback. Boy this team loves blindspots.

Its funny..idiot for most of the year we only had 3 starters on the oline..And at one point we had two starters..and yet we still managed This have fewer sacks allowed than Washington. I hope there rookie which by the way looks like dog sh!t right now is ready for Cole, Ware, Osi, Tuck…plus with mcnabb holding the ball too long like he’s well know for look for 50+ sack season for the skins and 5 going down with n injury….ohh we never touched Campbell just enough to make him fumble, hurt him, and pick him off..all becuz there oline was Great…fool..go order gamer rewind off NFL. Com and then come hollr..ur idiot for bringing up his oline blocking schemes..it mainly benefits the run..and if it was so great he wouldn’t of had a 9 year streak with no playoff wins before he got canned..the time has changed..and so did the NFL. 1000 yard rushed don’t mean nutn these days..so he will produce a 1 k back but still be out of the playoffs…

Silencer, you still didn’t address the revolving door in the center of the line…and the part about how our offensive line was sodomized by the Cowboys twice in a row. Care to expound on that part of the comment that was made?

If the Andy wasn’t confident in the guys we have ready to replace Jackson, we would have drafted one…Andy has always been successful at finding excellent talent on the oline weather it was undrafted guys or late round picks..(herremans, Jackson, Cole)..And who’s to say the skins rook will be any good..look at guys like b. Albert, g. Cherilous, c. Williams..they suck..n I’m pretty sure they wer all first rounders. Ur n outsider..u have no idea what talent level we have at center outside of Jackson..ur looking as if no one can take his place and be successful..u know people thought the same when fraley was hurt n Jackson came in and breasted it…so..believe or not…go be a skins fan with ur sh!tty evaluations of pro players..y aren’t u in the league Mr. Super evaluator..LOL…ur a joke.

Silencer, you know I’m generally on your side here, but Andy hasn’t ‘Always’ been successful at that. You’re going a bit too far. Shipley, Cole, and McGlynn have all been in the process of grooming to play center. Cole not so much as when Jackson was healthy, he was a guard, and he sure played poorly when he had to fill in for Cole. What song doesn’t realize, is that with an offseason of gearing up to play center, those three guys will most likely be on track to be able to play well at the C position for the Eagles. Song is a simpleton, and therefore he’s unable to see the subtle nuances, like the fact that we have 3 people on the roster, other than Jamal Jackson, who can play center and who are in training to do it. Song doesn’t think that the O line coaches and Reid are working to prepare those guys and also monitoring Kevin Mawae. Song would only be happy if we signed a big name center (because he thinks such a thing exists), or have drafted one high. Either that or Song really knows that he’s full of crap, but he’s picking an easy target for his negativity. Either way, don’t get wrapped up in his 2nd grade level thought process…
