The Eagles early morning practice was abbreviated because the field was wet and the big boys come in later today.  They were on the field a little bit over an hour.  This was the last practice exclusively for the youngsters.
It’ll get serious from here on out.¬† They’ll have the pads on, on Saturday morning and we’ll find out if any of these rookies can play this game.
Again the work was focused on the red zone.
Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick were missing as expected and all the snaps were taken by rookie Mike Kafka.  Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg made a strong statement about Kafka.
He said Kafka has learned this offense faster than any rookie whom he has coached in a couple of decades.¬† I’ll have to agree with him because I would think this kid was a veteran, if I didn’t know any better.
He throws a catchable ball and does a good job of giving the receiver a chance to make a play without risking the interception.  Of course as a rookie, he throws his share of checkdowns, which are passes to the tight ends and backs after the linebackers have dropped into coverage.
He did a good job in the red zone work.¬† Most of the time, it’s one, two, three and the ball is out, which is the way the standard west coast offense is run and amazing that Kafka knows the offense so well.
This young fella has done an amazing job of learning this offense in such a short time, but his arm strength is very limited.¬† I don’t think he could consistently make the outside throws.
The kid is smart and he played in a similar offense in college.
I’ll have more for you about this morning’s practice, later this afternoon.
umm hmm im on the kafka bandwagon
Sounds good, lock him up long term, he will be the back-up to Kolb for 2011 and beyond..
I heard it took McNabb until his 4th-5th Season to get comfortable with a lot of plays/schemes which wasn’t really a surprise since McNabb scored very low on his initial “Wonderlic” test…
PW, I’ve been waiting for this. So kafka throws a catchable ball, so does Kolb. Gives the receiver a chance to make a play after the catch, just like Kolb, Quick release, just like Kolb. Smart kid picking up the O, just like Kolb. Limited arm strength, I think Kolb has a bit of a better arm but more or less just like Kolb.
So you’re going to run and jump on the DeKafkanated bandwagon and still talk smack about Kolb from the other side of your face when they are just about the SAME PLAYER with very similar skill sets.
To me this just says that we’ll have two QB’s who are quality WCO QB’s. Good position depth IMO, good job FO for scouting this kid.
Who cares? It’s practice. Just like the jury is still out on Kolb and will be for a while I don’t care what a rookie QB is doing in morning drills that aren’t serious. And Paulman it McNabb 4-5 years but yet the team was in the NFC Championship how many of those years? Just stop it with the cheap shots. No one cares what happens in practice. They need to practice but all that matters are the results on Sunday.
wed july 28th this is what csn reported
The afternoon was another up-and-down practice for Kevin Kolb, his second of the day. Kolb went 3-for-5 during the 11-on-11 drill and 2-for-4 with a touchdown in the 7-on-7’s. As for Michael Vick, Vick went a perfect 4-for-4 with two touchdowns in the red zone drill that closed practice.
ummm hmmm
Guys…. let me know if you want to be in the fantasy league again this year.
same article
Stud: Mike Vick
Hey, he didn’t miss a pass in the red zone drill, connecting on all four of his attempts. He hit running back Charles Scott in the flat, tight end Cornelius Ingram on the right hash, tight end Clay Harbor in the back-left corner of the end zone and Chad Hall in the shallow right side of the end zone. It was an impressive exhibition.
Dud: Charles Scott
It’s only the second day of practices and Scott looked a bit sluggish. He also gave up in the middle of a screen pass that was designed for him after he was poked in the eye. That’s not what coaches usually like to see from a seventh-round draft choice trying to make the team.
Play of the Afternoon
Undrafted rookie linebacker Simoni Lawrence made a lunging interception of a Mike Kafka pass in the end zone. Lawrence had good coverage on the play and displayed strong hands by plucking the ball out of midair with his body perpendicular to the ground.
This and That
‚Ä¢ Nate Allen’s first practice seemed to go well, especially considering he was working on less than four hours of sleep. But he did get beat for a touchdown by Chad Hall after he slipped.
‚Ä¢ Allen planned to text first-round pick Brandon Graham after the practice, telling him “You better hurry up and get out here.”
‚Ä¢ One more practice before the veterans report on Thursday afternoon. … Practice Thursday is at 8:45 a.m. The first full-team workout is Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. That session is closed to the public. The fans’ first glimpse of the full team is on Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m.

PM, where’d you hear that McNabb scored very low on his initial Wonderlic? With privy to such info, you must have really been surprised that McNabb went to multiple pro bowls and the Superbowl, huh?
Undoubtedly, Kafka will win multiple rings.
To Drummer,
Common knowledge about McNabb’s 1st Wonderlic Results (it was like an “8” or a “9”)
after some additional prepping, he retook it again and scored in the high teens.. Personally, I think the test tells a lot about a person’s problem solving and reasoning but that’s it. Sure it can translate to the NFL but that all depends on the system, team and coaches you play with. It takes a lot more than that to make a good QB. Let’s just put this to rest. Paulman always goes off talking about something that’s irrelevant to the article.
Here are some other recent players who had low scores, Ryan Leaf,Tim Tebow, Matt Lineart,Brady Quinn,Jemarcus Russell, Mike Vick also did not score well.
QB’s P Rivers, Flacco, Cassel, Rodgers, M Sanchez, J Freeman, Josh Johnson, S Wallace, D Dixon (from Steelers) ,J Campbell, Alex Smith and Kolb all scored well fyi…
Funny, you don’t get to a SB winner till 12
Don’t remember McNabb’s wonderlic being low…always thought he was pretty bright.
I get your point PW, frankly had the same sad thought when I saw it brought up.
Can’t believe that Ryan Leaf, Ben Rothelsburger or Todd Marinivich scored very well. Knuckleheads come in all shapes and sizes.
eli won a sb www but i understand that was a luck chip and dont count lol
they werent even a top 5 team in my book everything went right for that team my worse yr ever as a football fan
Wonderlic’s are just another standardized test – not sure if there is or is not a coorelation with winning or losing or talnet level – but it seems like its kind of a crap shoot looking at the list – Bradshaw was never known for being the smartest guy in the room – but his teams won – but they were great teams – Didn’t Dilfer win a SB (great Ravens D) And Steve Young – he was horrible when he played for Tampa – but then moved to a new (great team) and won a SB and ends up in the HOF – – I guess maybe its more of a tie breaker when trying to decide between two equals..
I agree navy. It’s more about the team you play with and coaches than the test score. I do think the test score could indicate some things but there are so many factors that determine success in the NFL. I do agree, it may be a tie breaker for some teams when having to choose between 2 guys that have similar skills. One coach may not care because he doesn’t have a system where he needs a “genuis” QB and he just wants the best talent he sees and another coach cares a lot because he wants someone who he feels may have some mental skills required for his team.
Kolb scored a 28 right there with Manning and Brees but below Rex Grossman, Brady Quinn and JP Losman. Most team probably want the QB in the 20s but obviously it’s a crap shoot.
Come on guys, who’s in for the fantasy football league
I heard trhough some of my Philly sources that G-Man is going to have some kind of “Wonderlic
Testing” for regular posters that need a minimum score of #22 before they can post on here again…
I also heard thru this same source that PW and Songs were petitoning to G-Man, saying that when
both there test scores were combined, (they took the tests at the same time) that they exceeded the #22 Minimum Score..
Schiller scored a #52 even though a #50 is a perfect score… figure that one out…
Right now the QB position for this team is suspect and it’s ironic the only QB on the Eagles with a track record and the athletic ability to lead a nfl team is not starting. Kolb will be garbage, as well as this career journeyman. Well at least we’ll be able to see the teams in the NFC east who have actually won championships return to playoffs. That will be good for the NFL again and it will not affect us at all. This is what we used to. Dallas will contend with that defense and pro bow QB…Washington will excel with that defense and probowl, franchise QB and The G Men will be third in line with a respectable defense and a proven QB…..If we start Vick we’ll win 8 games…maybe 9 but if we start Hoying Jr (Kolb) we’ll be lucky if we win 6 games….that’s the truth.
Lemme guess, PMan are you grading?
We will not know the truth till week 17 SONGS…that’s the truth.
Yes WWW,,
I scored a 23 on my test and G is letting me grade the others…
So farm PW got a 11 and Songs got a 10, Navy got a 37, Schiller a 52, Jphalines a 29
and I am just getttig to yours …
but wait if your grading it then my 11 and songs 10 are great scores
is this graded on a curve?
I want a re-test cause I thought the wonderlic test was about tasting ice cream and I spent the night before “studying” with a 5 gallon bucket of that Turkey Hill “Eagle Touchdown Sundae” flavor…tried to take the test the next day and my brain was still frozen from the night before…scored a 4
