Nobody can go to an Eagles practice and not see the tremendous potential that they have at their receiver positions. This team is potent with DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Brent Celek, LeSean McCoy and their backups.
Kevin Kolb is capable of throwing the short to intermediate pass with great accuracy and timing. At times he has run the offense with tremendous precision, but he must become more consistent. If het struggles with consistency when he’s not getting hit, it’s surely going to be tough not to struggle with it when 280 pound defensive ends are running full speed and putting their helmets in his back.
The Eagles should win a few games on their schedule simply because they’re so explosive. We know what Jackson can do by himself if a team allows a game to become a foot-race, but Kolb will need the time to get the ball off.
They’re getting ready to start their preseason schedule on Friday, so it’s important that they start getting things together. The mistakes have to stop and they need to being executing the way I believe they’re capable of doing.
Few want to say it but the Flight Night performance by the Eagles offense would have been better titled “Fright Night”, as they took turns messing up. Sometimes it was the center, other times it was the quarterback, while the receivers took their turns dropping passes or running the wrong routes.
I know all of their weapons weren’t healthy and available, but the performance didn’t look good at all. Some of their training camp practices have taken on a similar tone.
Yesterday at beginning of a news conference, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was asked about the progress of Kevin Kolb and he responded, “Kevin’s done an outstanding job. He certainly has the ability to play at a high level, and we’re getting all of our hard work and preparation done.”
Next up he was asked about how he was reading blitzes and handling pressure and he said, “He’s doing an outstanding job and we’re giving him a bunch of work versus the blitz, and he’s done an outstanding job of that.”
Later on in the news conference when he was asked whether some of his players had stage fright on Flight Night, Marty said, “Well, that happens. That’s real. I think that’s a real thing. And I’m glad we went through that before we get to the preseason and regular season games. I think that’s a real thing.”
When he was asked specifically about Kolb’s play at yesterday’s workout, Mornhinweg wasn’t as glowing in his praise, “There were, let’s say two or three plays yesterday morning and he was sharp in the afternoon too, that we really focused on getting it done. And then this morning, I thought he was real sharp. There were probably one or two plays in there, if I remember here I have to see it on the film, that we’ll work on to get him better for tomorrow and so forth.”
Kolb has struggled versus the blitz. He often rushes his throws when he doesn’t have to and he doesn’t have the quick feet in the pocket.
When asked about the progress of his offense, I thought Mornhinweg was very honest. “Now, we’re so young and in some cases inexperienced that it’s a little bit more up and down than in a normal camp. But, I do think that we’re making excellent progress and certainly anticipated some of these ups and downs.”
“There will be a time where, we’ve been through a couple of just great practices, we’ve been in a couple where it’s been the opposite of that, and then we’ve been in a couple where we’ve had some great, just terrific periods and then we fell into a couple other periods. So, we’re up and down just a little bit, but with this youth and inexperience we sure are getting better at really a high rate from day-to-day with the exception of taking a step back every now and then.”
It’s still very early and the Eagles haven’t even played a preseason game, but it’s time for the offense to start stepping it up and showing us what they can do.
Gulp.
Marty is talking out of both sides of his mouth……This QB stinks and he’s scared.
If he’s rushing passes with a red shirt on…..what will he do when the beasts are baring down on him?
Get ready for a Looooooooooooooooong Season. Get your paperbags with holes cut out ready. Receivers with a scared QB…….Let’s see how he does when he’s knocked in the chin a few times.
Is it me or the anticipation for the season lackluster? There’s not that same anticipation.
Are you really McNabb’s Mom Songs? I think you are.
Kolb or Vick and this Eagle Offense will only be as good as the play of the interior of the Offensive
line. Right now with the 1st String, it’s MJG,McGlynn and Stacey Andrews, which not only have their hands full with the Eagles DT’s but will struggle versus opponenets with strong D/Lines
Friday’s game versus Jax will be a good teast, the Jaguars have a young, but agressive D/Line
Once the season starts, hopefully Herremans is back and in playing shape but he needs at least
2-3 weeks of camp and a couple of Pre-Season games to get some basic timing down and get his football legs under him… McGlynn is getting lots of reps with Cole nursing a hamstring..Cole has been a little disappointing to me, He has known all off-season that J Jackson is recovering from Knee Surgery and that the Starting Center position was his for the taking to play, so I would have expected his to lose a little weight in be in overall better condition that he appears…Stacey Andrews has looked better to me as camp has gone along and hopefully he plays up to his potenial… MJG Has held his own but I am not sure if he’s starter quality in the NFL week in and week out… LT J Peters has looked fantastic in camp, he’s in better shape physically and I think mentally has the “Eagle System” and routine down, I think he will play at a very high and dominant level this season…
Justice just needs to keep working and use his hands more to engage rushers at the point of attack,
He’s in great shape and I think he will have another solid year in which he improves…
If you look at the Eagles 1st 6 opponents this season (Packers,Lions,Jaguars,Redskins,49ers,Falcons) there are not a lot of dominating type of D/Line
on these teams.. The Packers/Redksins/49ers allemploy a 3-4 Defensive front while the Lions,JAgs and Falcons use mostly the standard 4-3 set and have lots of young players along their d/lines.
The 2nd half of season has Eagles playing much better and experienced D/Lines versus the Titans,Colts,Texans,Giants,Cowboys,Bears and Vikings, so hopefully by this time both Herremans and Jackson are back to action playing at a high level and have strong back-ups in Cole/MJG.
If Eagles can come out of the gate and play well as a unit offensively and start 4-2 which is attainable if they play smart and protect the ball, then they could be in position to do some great things the 2nd half of the season…
Good one JimmyMac,
Now that you mentioned it, I did see Songs walking around with a “Campbells Soup Chef Hat”
over the weekend around the Washington Monument…( I think I took a picture too that I will post)
well did u expect marty to come out and say “well look he aint d5
bare with it ppl he’s an avg qb he will be ok sometimes and horrible others
we dont have a shot at a sb and at this point if we make the offs i’ll be extatic
he has a few games to work out the kinks if he fails we will make approriate moves”
Paul..put your money where your mouth is….I’ll double any amount you want to bet that this team is not 4-2 by game 6
what you want to do?
How about a date with the Zit Girl that PW says was your Fiance..
Boy, Songs, you’re really going out on a limb with “not 4-2”. Sounds like you’re the one that needs to put up or shut up.

How insecure can a coach be? Ask Andy Reid since he had a fan remove his Redskins McNabb jersey…Are you kidding me? That’s just pathetic, he better get used to seeing that Redskins jersey. I suspect there will be quite a few at the Linc as it gets deep into the season.

Actually I asked for PMans predictions…thanks PMan.
Well..here’s my email phillyraww at aol
i’m serous…….you’ll get double if the eagles win 4 of the first 6…….this offense will implode by week 3 when dink and dunk Kolb throw a few picks and Djax numbers are not that good …especially with Maclin emerging…keep your eyes on this….In a contrac year this can get real ugly.
thats fine www but notice his email is directed at me for some reason i wont ever ask pman anything lol
You hurt my feelings PW…
